Worth buying from a grower or a pastry shop that names its lemons, for about €15. Skip novelty bottles and anything with added coloring, whatever the label's picture of Capri.

Gran Caffè Gambrinus
Worth ten minutes and €1.50 at the bar to see the rooms. Sitting down multiplies the bill several times over for no better coffee; a 2017 review paid €16 for a brioche and two ginseng coffees.

Pasticceria Poppella
Worth it on the Sanità walk or near Via Toledo: a very good cheap pastry. Not worth a special trip or a long queue, because the fiocco is simple and widely copied.

Il Vero Bar del Professore
Worth it for the caffè alla nocciola, which is a dessert in a cup and the thing it invented. For a plain espresso, go to a local bar; this corner of Piazza Trieste e Trento is crowded and service can be curt.

Napoli Pizza Village
Skip it as a reason to travel, and skip it for your one great pizza. The same pizzerias serve better pizza in their own rooms in Naples, without a train ride and a festival queue. Go only if you are staying on the Campi Flegrei coast in July and want the free concerts.

Skip it as a base for a sightseeing trip: every day starts with a bus or funicular and a change. Go for an afternoon at the Gaiola or Marechiaro, or stay here only if the trip is about rest, views and a car.

Skip it unless you are booking the Ducasse restaurant or catching early ferries. At €592 to €848 a night you are paying more than the Vesuvio for a view of the commercial port.

The building is handsome, but €307 to €377 room only is what the seafront Excelsior charges, and here you are 40 minutes on foot from Plebiscito. Book it only for the station or a conference.

Skip the sit-down meal: a detailed 2024 review found tired fried food, ordinary pizza and prices no longer cheap. If you are passing and hungry, a fried pizza from the window is fine, but Sorbillo's Zia Esterina counter or La Masardona do it better.

At €100 to €150 without the star, Veritas gives you starred cooking for less and George a better view for more. Go to Palazzo Petrucci Pizzeria in the old town instead: No. 3 in Italy on the 2026 pizza list, at pizzeria prices.
