The theme was I colori di Napoli, the colors of Naples, with a subtitle from a line by the writer Matilde Serao: "drunk with light, mad with colors". It followed four years built on the elements: earth in 2022, air in 2023, water in 2024 and fire in 2025. The mayor's office counted:

• Over 200 events in all 10 of the city's municipalities.
• More than 70 themed itineraries in a program called Tinte forti, from the history of Neapolitan medicine to rationalist architecture, the relics of the saints, the villas of Posillipo, Rione Sanita, the tuff quarries of the Vallone San Rocco, the murals of Ponticelli and the Pedamentina steps.
• Nearly 20 exhibitions, plus a film strand and workshops.
• A headline free concert: pianist Stefano Bollani at Rotonda Diaz on the seafront, May 31 at 9 p.m. In 2025 the big night was an open-air screening of the Twin Peaks pilot in Piazza del Gesu.

The reason to plan around the festival is access. In 2026 the extraordinary openings included Palazzo San Giacomo (the town hall on Piazza Municipio), the Teatro di San Carlo, the church of the Certosa di San Martino, the Emeroteca Tucci newspaper library, the former Leonardo Bianchi psychiatric hospital, and three small museums: the Filippo Palizzi museum of industrial art, the Masseria Luce museum of farm life and the Ascione coral museum.

Those lists change every year. What does not change is the shape: a handful of rarely opened buildings, a lot of guided walks through neighborhoods, and a free concert on the seafront near the end of May.

1. Watch the Comune di Napoli news page from mid-April. In 2025 and 2026 the program was presented on April 29.
2. Find the events on Eventbrite under Cultura - Comune di Napoli.
3. Bookings for each week open on the Monday before. Set a reminder for Monday morning if you want a headline opening.
4. Tickets are free, but places are limited, and a booking is what gets you in.

The program and the booking pages are in Italian. Browser translation handles them fine. Assume a guided visit is in Italian unless the listing says otherwise; if language matters, choose exhibitions and open-house visits over talks.

May 2027 will be busier than usual. Saturday, May 1 is both Labour Day and the spring rite of San Gennaro, with its procession through the old town. And the Louis Vuitton Cup, the challenger series of the 38th America's Cup, is scheduled on the Bay of Naples from May 22, with the America's Cup match itself from July 10, 2027. Book hotels early, and expect the seafront to be busier than in an ordinary May.

June 2 is also a public holiday, Republic Day, which is why the festival usually ends on it.

Do not plan a trip around one opening you have read about: it may not return. Plan a May trip, then fill one or two slots with whatever the festival offers that week.
