Naples in 1 day
One day is enough to understand why people fall for Naples, if you spend it in the right square kilometer. This plan keeps you in the old town until late afternoon, where the Veiled Christ, a Caravaggio altarpiece, the cathedral and the city's Greek and Roman foundations sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, then walks you down Via Toledo to the sea for sunset.
It costs about €191 for two before your hotel, and the only thing you must book is Cappella Sansevero. Do not put this day on a Tuesday, when the chapel is closed. We left out the MANN on purpose: its mosaic rooms and Secret Cabinet are shut until November 30, 2026, and three hours there would cost you the old town. If you have a second day, Naples in 2 days adds it with Pompeii.

In this guide
8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Spaccanapoli and the Veiled Christ
- 8:30 a.m. Breakfast in Piazza Dante. A warm sfogliatella from SfogliateLab (Piazza Dante 80, €2 in its online shop), then a standing espresso at Caffè Mexico at number 86, reported at under €2. It comes sugared unless you say senza zucchero.
- 9:15 a.m. Gesù Nuovo. Free, about 470 m from the square. Twenty minutes: the diamond-point facade, then the baroque interior it hides.
- 9:30 a.m. Santa Chiara cloister, €7. The majolica-tiled cloister opens at 9:30 a.m. (Monday to Saturday); the basilica next door is free. The cloister is closed on Thursday, October 22, 2026, when the church stays open.
- 10:30 a.m. Cappella Sansevero, €12. Book the 10:30 a.m. slot. Slots run every 30 minutes and the grace period is only 10 minutes. The ticket office has moved to Via Raimondo di Sangro 12. No phones or photos inside.
- 11:15 a.m. San Gregorio Armeno. The nativity-workshop street, 370 m away via Piazza San Gaetano. Fifteen minutes is plenty outside November and December.
- 11:45 a.m. Pio Monte della Misericordia, €10. Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy in the chapel it was painted for, open seven days a week.
- 12:15 p.m. The Duomo. Free, about 100 m further. Visits pause during Mass (9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., plus 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sundays).
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.: pizza at Da Michele, then underground
1 p.m. Da Michele. Via Cesare Sersale 1, 518 m (7 minutes) from the Duomo, open daily from 11 a.m. Take a numbered ticket at the door; there are no bookings. The July 2026 menu has four pizzas, all €6.50, a €1 cover, and a half-liter of water for €2. Order one margherita and one marinara and share: the marinara tells you more about the dough.
3 p.m. Napoli Sotterranea, €18. Walk back 740 m to Piazza San Gaetano 68. Guided tours in English and Italian leave every hour from 10 a.m.; the last is at 6 p.m. Small parties do not book: you queue, which the operator says takes 10 to 90 minutes. That is why this plan goes mid-afternoon, after the lunch rush. Allow about 1 hour 20 minutes, including the Roman theater hidden inside a family's flat. It is 136 steps down to about 40 m, with an optional narrow candlelit passage.
5 p.m. to dinner: Via Toledo, Plebiscito and the sea
From Piazza San Gaetano it is 2.2 km (1.4 miles), about 29 minutes on foot, to Piazza del Plebiscito: west along the decumanus, then down Via Toledo. Look into the Galleria Umberto I on the way. The square is often fenced for events, so do not count on the photo.
Then follow the Lungomare 1.1 km to the causeway of Castel dell'Ovo. The castle itself is still closed for restoration, but the causeway and the view are free. Sunset in Naples is at about 6:46 p.m. on October 1, 6:24 p.m. on October 15, 5:08 p.m. on October 26 after the clocks change, and 4:46 p.m. in mid-November. In November, swap the order: seafront first, underground after dark.
8 p.m. Dinner at Osteria della Mattonella. Via Giovanni Nicotera 13, 604 m from Plebiscito; ring the bell. Order the genovese. It publishes no prices; a food-tour operator's 2026 guide puts it at €20–€35 a head. Sources disagree on its closing day, so phone +39 081 416541.
Which day of the week, and how to swap
| Day | Works? | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday | Yes | Everything open. Thursday October 22, 2026: skip the Santa Chiara cloister. |
| Sunday | With swaps | The cloister opens 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: do Sansevero at 9:30 a.m. and the cloister at 10:30 a.m. Dinner at Tandem instead (ziti with ragù €12). |
| Tuesday | Not ideal | Sansevero is closed. Use the hour for the Duomo's rooftop tour (from €6, 45 minutes). |
On the first Sunday of the month state museums are free, but nothing in this plan is a state museum, so it changes little. The Duomo's Mass times matter more on Sundays.
Flying in November 2026? Capodichino airport is closed for runway works from November 1 to 30, and some airlines have moved their flights to Salerno airport (QSR), about an hour's drive from Naples: see getting to Naples.
What we left out, and why. Castel Nuovo (€10, closed Sundays) is worth it only if its halls are open that day; Palazzo Reale (€15, closed Wednesdays) loses its Hall of Mirrors and Salone d'Ercole to restoration from October 1, 2026; Galleria Borbonica runs Friday to Sunday only. None beats the old town on a single day.
What the day costs for two
| Item | For two |
|---|---|
| Two sfogliatelle at SfogliateLab, €2 each (online shop price) | €4 |
| Two espressos at Caffè Mexico, up to €2 each (reported) | €4 |
| Santa Chiara cloister, €7 each | €14 |
| Cappella Sansevero, €12 each | €24 |
| Pio Monte della Misericordia, €10 each | €20 |
| Da Michele: two pizzas €13, cover €2, two waters €4 (July 2026 menu) | €19 |
| Napoli Sotterranea, €18 each | €36 |
| Dinner at Osteria della Mattonella, top of the reported €20–€35 range | up to €70 |
| Total | about €191 |
Gesù Nuovo, the Duomo, the Lungomare and the castle causeway are free. Add Naples' tourist tax if you sleep here: since May 1, 2026 it is €6 per person per night in 4-star hotels and €5.50 in 3-star hotels and B&Bs. Under-18s get into Pio Monte and the cloister at reduced prices, so check each page if you travel with children.
Tickets and tours you can book

Naples: Downtown Tour with Veiled Christ & St Clare Tickets
Only 30 people are allowed in the chapel at once, so expect to queue. The cloister is always closed on Sunday afternoons, when the tour covers the chapel only.

Frequently asked questions
Is one day in Naples enough?
For the old town, the pizza and a sense of the city, yes. It is not enough for the MANN, Pompeii or the islands. Three days is the length we would choose for a first trip: one for the old town, one for Pompeii and Vesuvius, one for the MANN and the Sanità.
Do I need to book Cappella Sansevero for a day trip to Naples?
Yes. Booking is compulsory. Online tickets go on sale 60 days ahead, with an extra release two days before, and the desk sells walk-up tickets from the same quota. On a busy day you may find nothing left, so book as soon as your date is fixed.
Can I add the Archaeological Museum to one day?
Only by dropping Napoli Sotterranea and the seafront. The MANN needs about three hours, costs €20 and is closed on Tuesdays. Until November 30, 2026 its mosaics and Secret Cabinet are shut, so on a single day we would not.
What if it rains?
This plan copes: the chapels, the museum rooms and the underground are all indoors. Move the seafront to a dry hour, or replace it with a Line 1 ride to Toledo station, whose mosaics are the reason to go underground in the rain. An ANM single is €1.30.
Is Da Michele's queue worth it on a one-day visit?
Yes, at 1 p.m. on a weekday, because the numbered ticket keeps it orderly. At 8 p.m. on a Saturday it is not. Our famous pizzerias page compares the queues.
