Tandem Ragù
Tandem opened in July 2013 on Via Giovanni Paladino 51, billing itself as the first restaurant in Naples devoted entirely to ragù napoletano, the Sunday meat sauce that simmers for hours, and to Sunday genovese, the onion-and-beef sauce. It has grown into a small chain: four restaurants and several takeaway counters in the old town, plus a branch on the Vomero.
It is cheap for what it is. On the current English menu, dated July 2026, ziti with ragù or genovese cost €12 (€9.50 and €10.50 on the Piazza del Gesù branch's January 2026 menu), and a scarpetta, a bowl of sauce to mop up with bread, €10. There is a €2.50 cover per person.

What to order
Order the thing the place was built for. Two people can share one scarpetta and order one pasta each:
| Dish | Price |
|---|---|
| Bowl of ragù or genovese with rustic bread (scarpetta) | €10 |
| Hand-broken ziti or rigatoni with ragù or genovese | €12 |
| Fresh ferretto fusilli with ragù or genovese | €14 |
| Fresh gnocchi with ragù and smoked provola | €15 |
| Ragù meatballs or braciola | €14 |
| Pot of simmering ragù, served bubbling at the table | €56 |
Prices are from the English menu dated July 2026. The cuzzetiello is the end of a loaf hollowed out and filled with up to three ingredients, such as meatballs in ragù, eggplant parmigiana and smoked provola. The January 2026 menu listed coffee made in a traditional cuccuma at €2.50 and a babà at €6.
Beyond the pasta
The rest of the July 2026 menu leans the same way. Among the starters: eggplant parmigiana with ragù (€12), two fried lasagna fritters filled with ragù (€10) and zeppoline, fried dough with basil (€8). A mozzarella stuffed with ragù, genovese or parmigiana is €14. The baked Neapolitan lasagna, with ragù, ricotta, provola, meatballs and egg, is €15.
For a party trick there is ragù and vodka (€12): a bowl of ragù served with three shots of vodka. For a group, the €56 pot of ragù served at the table is the showpiece.
Which branch?
The original on Via Paladino, a narrow old-town street, is, in Tandem's words, still one of its regulars' favorites. The Piazza del Gesù branch at Calata Trinità Maggiore 12 is the easiest to find, right by Gesù Nuovo. The Pignatelli branch is the newest, and Via Bernini serves the Vomero. Sedile di Porto was marked temporarily closed on Tandem's site in September 2026.
The takeaway counters (Mezzocannone, Benedetto Croce, which doubles as the "Casa del Ragù" shop selling jars, and Porta Capuana) are useful for a quick lunch between sights. The menus we saw are the January 2026 Piazza del Gesù menu and the English menu dated July 2026; the prices on this page are July's.
What Tandem is not
Tandem is fast and cheap, and it serves a Sunday dish every day of the week. The menu itself warns that frozen produce may be used when fresh is not available, and that ingredients change with the season. The rooms are functional.
If you want a trattoria meal with a genovese that the cook has fussed over, book Osteria della Mattonella or La Locanda Gesù Vecchio, which is on the same street at Via Paladino 26.
