Amalfi Coast boat day
The Amalfi Coast is best seen from the water: the road is narrow and slow, and Positano and Amalfi both face the sea. A boat day runs along the coast from the Sorrento peninsula, drops you in Amalfi for three hours or so and in Positano for one or two, and brings you back before dark.
Prices on GetYourGuide on September 30, 2026: €60 with Cooperativa S. Antonio from Marina del Cantone at Nerano (8 hours, 4.7 from about 3,900 reviews); €119 for a smaller boat with hotel transfer from Sorrento (4.9 from about 5,000 reviews); and €97 for a hydrofoil day from Naples run by WORLDTOURS (9 hours, 4.2 from 941 reviews). Doing it yourself from Sorrento by ferry and bus costs about €27.50.

Doing it yourself: ferry out, bus back
From Sorrento, the cheapest good day:
- Alilauro ferry Sorrento to Amalfi: €17.50 (to Positano: €19), season to November 3 (Positano to October 31).
- Explore Amalfi, then take the SITA bus to Positano and back to Sorrento. The CostieraSITA pass covers 24 hours of buses for €10. Singles: Sorrento–Positano €2.40, Sorrento–Amalfi €3.40.
Total about €27.50, against €60 for the Nerano boat. You lose the lap along the cliffs on the way back and the Li Galli photo stop; you gain freedom over timing. The coast road is slow, so allow time. SITA's timetable from September 14, 2026 has Sorrento 8:30 a.m., Positano 9:10, Amalfi 10:00.
From Naples, it is a long day either way. The Circumvesuviana to Sorrento takes 69 minutes on the fast trains (€4.60). SITA's direct Naples bus leaves at 9 a.m. on weekdays and reaches Amalfi at 11 (a few afternoon runs follow, none on Sundays); its only returns leave Amalfi at 5:45 and 6:20 a.m., so it is not a day trip. Our Amalfi Coast from Naples itinerary covers the one-day and two-day plans.
What the day is like
- Time ashore is short. Two hours in Positano is time for a walk down to the beach and a drink; three in Amalfi covers the cathedral square and lunch. Ravello, up the hill, does not fit.
- Swimming: the Nerano listing includes "access to swimming"; bring a towel.
- Food: none of the options include lunch. Budget for it, or carry a picnic from a Sorrento bakery.
- Seasickness: the Naples listing warns it is unsuitable for people prone to it. Sit at the back, low down, and look at the horizon.
Weather and season
Every option depends on the sea. The Naples listing says the tour is subject to sea conditions and coast guard approval. Alilauro's scheduled coast ferries are sold only to November 3, 2026, and the Positano route to October 31. If you are here from November to March, the SITA bus is the only way, and our Amalfi Coast page covers it.
