Via Toledo and Municipio
Via Toledo is the long, straight shopping street that runs from Piazza Trieste e Trento, beside Piazza del Plebiscito, north to Piazza Dante. Piazza Municipio, a few blocks east, runs down from the city hall to Castel Nuovo and the port, where the hydrofoils leave for Capri, Ischia and Procida from Molo Beverello. Between them sit the Teatro di San Carlo, the Palazzo Reale and the glass-roofed Galleria Umberto I.
It is the most practical address in Naples. On Kayak on September 30, 2026, the four hotels we checked here sold their cheapest doubles for €225 to €848 on October 14, 2026 and €183 to €592 on November 11, taxes and fees included. The spread is wide because the hotels are: a business tower with views, two classic four-stars and a design five-star.

Hotels and what they cost
| Hotel (Kayak, cheapest double) | October 14, 2026 | November 11, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| NH Napoli Panorama, Via Medina (four-star) | €225, room only | €183, room only |
| Grand Hotel Oriente, Via Armando Diaz (four-star) | €396 | €286 |
| Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo, Via Ponte di Tappia (four-star) | €496 | €396 |
| Romeo Napoli, Via Cristoforo Colombo (five-star) | €848, breakfast | €592, breakfast |
The NH is the value pick: every room is on the 16th floor or above, and it undercut the others by €100 or more on both dates. The Romeo is the dearest hotel we priced in the whole city; its selling points are a rooftop pool and the one-Michelin-star Alain Ducasse restaurant. The Quartieri Spagnoli, directly uphill from Via Toledo, have cheaper small hotels such as Il Convento.
Ferries, metro and funicular
This is where Naples' transport lines meet. From Piazza Municipio, Molo Beverello is 7 minutes (500 m) on foot by OpenStreetMap routing; that is the reason island-hoppers stay here. See ferries to the islands for operators and times.
Metro Line 1 has three stations along the strip: Municipio, Toledo (one of the Art Stations) and Dante. From Municipio it is three stops east to Garibaldi for Napoli Centrale and the Circumvesuviana. Line 6, reopened in July 2024, runs from Municipio west to Chiaia, Mergellina and Mostra, every 14 minutes; at weekends it stops in the early afternoon, per Wikipedia's summary of the ANM timetable. The Funicolare Centrale climbs from Augusteo, just off Via Toledo, to Piazza Fuga on the Vomero. ANM's own single ticket, valid on metro Lines 1 and 6, the funiculars and city buses, was €1.30 in UnicoCampania's published table, and ANM keeps it unchanged when integrated fares rise on October 1, 2026 (the new integrated prices were unpublished on September 30).
Walking times
By OpenStreetMap foot routing from Piazza Municipio: Piazza del Plebiscito 9 minutes (650 m), Piazza del Gesu Nuovo 13 minutes (950 m) and Molo Beverello 7 minutes (500 m). From the NH Napoli Panorama on Via Medina, Napoli Centrale is 31 minutes (2.3 km). Via Toledo itself is flat; the streets uphill to the west climb steeply into the Quartieri Spagnoli.
Noise and character
This is the working center, not a picturesque quarter. By day Via Toledo is packed with shoppers and the port roads carry heavy traffic, buses and taxis. Evenings are calmer than in the Centro Storico, since the offices and shops close and there are fewer bars. The larger hotels here are modern buildings with lifts, which matters if you are travelling with heavy luggage or limited mobility; many old-town palazzi have steps at the door. If you want a room with a view without paying for the seafront, a high floor at the NH looks straight over the port and Castel Nuovo to Vesuvius.
Safety
Crowded shopping streets and metro stations are where pickpockets work, and the UK government's travel advice for Italy tells visitors to take care on public transport and in main metro stations. Keep your bag closed and in front of you on Via Toledo and on Line 1 at rush hour. Around the port, ignore unofficial offers of ferry tickets or luggage help; buy at the operators' kiosks. Our Is Naples safe? page covers the rest.
Driving and parking
Most hotels here have no parking of their own: the NH sends guests to a nearby garage that cannot be booked in advance. At the north end, the Tarsia-Pignasecca-Dante ZTL is active every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Piazza Gesu e Maria gate, and Via Domenico Soriano is a pedestrian area all day. On strike days, the port can be affected too: the national multi-sector strike on October 2, 2026 included the maritime sector, hours not yet specified when we checked.
Who should stay here
Stay here if you plan two or more island days, want the metro at your door, or prefer a modern hotel with a lift. It suits first-timers who want to walk to Plebiscito and the old town without living in the lanes. Stay elsewhere if you want character on your doorstep: the Centro Storico for atmosphere, the Lungomare for views.
