Starita has made pizza in Materdei since 1901, at Via Materdei 27/28. Its claim to fame is the montanara: a disc of dough fried first, then topped and finished in the wood oven so the outside turns crisp and the inside stays soft. Don Antonio Starita created his version in the 1980s, and the house keeps the recipe for its sauce to itself. On the Naples menu linked from Starita's site, the Montanara Starita costs €8.50, the same as its signature Marinara Starita. A plain margherita is €7.
It is closed on Monday. The rest of the week it serves lunch from noon to 3:30 p.m. and dinner from 7 to 11:30 p.m. The Naples branch does not accept reservations, so you arrive and wait.

What to order
Prices from the Naples menu (a PDF dated November 2024 that the pizzeria still links as current):
- Montanara Starita, €8.50: double-cooked, with Neapolitan ragù, smoked provola, Pecorino Romano and basil. Order this.
- Marinara Starita, €8.50: peeled tomato and datterino tomato, pecorino, garlic, oregano, pepper, basil. The house calls it its signature dish.
- Margherita, €7, and a plain marinara, €5.50.

- Corna di Maradona, €9: dough rolled into a horseshoe, fried, filled with ricotta, cicoli and pepper.

Every pizza gets olive oil and Pecorino Romano. Cover is €1.50 a person and an espresso €1.50. A meal of montanara, starter, drink and cover comes in under €20 a head.
The wait
Starita does not publish waiting times. With no bookings, the rule is simple: arrive at noon or 7 p.m. when the doors open, or come late in the lunch service, which runs until 3:30 p.m.
If you are coming for the montanara specifically, the menu also has a Montanara fuscella (with buffalo ricotta) and a Montanara genovese (with onion genovese sauce), both €8.50.
Drinks and dessert
The drinks list is short and cheap for a famous name. Starita pours beers from K-Birr, a small Campanian brewery: the house Don Antonio Helles is €4 for 0.3 liters or €5 for 0.4 liters on tap. A Starita Spritz or a gin and tonic is €8, a Limoncello di Capri €3.50, and a bottle of filtered still or sparkling water €1. The wine list is longer than you would expect, with bottles from about €12.
For dessert, the pizzeria's own invention is angioletti fritti: small sticks of fried pizza dough with Nutella (€5 small, €8 medium) or artisan pistachio cream (€7 or €9). The same angioletti, with rocket and datterino tomatoes, open the menu as a savory starter at €5 or €7.50. They are the order for a table of four.
Getting there
Materdei is uphill from the National Archaeological Museum and next to Rione Sanità. Metro line 1 has a Materdei station. The pizzeria fits well after a morning at the MANN or before the Rione Sanità walk.
