The Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello)

Train to Sorrento, then SITA bus CostieraSITA pass €10 for 24 h Coast boats end early November

The Amalfi Coast is the stretch of cliffs and towns along the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula, from Positano to Vietri sul Mare. Three names draw most visitors: Positano, stacked down a ravine to its beach; Amalfi, the old maritime republic with its cathedral; and Ravello, on the hill above Amalfi, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. From Naples, Amalfi is about 61 km (38 miles) by road, but the coast road is slow and there is no train.

The practical route from Naples is the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento (69 minutes, €4.60), then SITA buses along the coast: about 40 minutes to Positano and 1 hour 30 minutes to Amalfi. A CostieraSITA pass gives 24 hours of unlimited SITA travel for €10. Boats are faster and far more pleasant, but seasonal: Alilauro's Sorrento-Positano route ends on October 31 and Sorrento-Amalfi on November 3, 2026.

Bus times are from SITA's Amalfi Coast timetable in force from September 14, 2026: for example, Sorrento 8:30 a.m., Positano (Chiesa Nuova) 9:10 a.m., Amalfi 10 a.m. Fares are the UnicoCampania bands for each pair of towns. Direct Naples-Amalfi buses leave the Varco Immacolatella port gate at 9 a.m. (reaching Amalfi at 11 a.m.) and 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and at 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday (a run the timetable marks as a connection at Vietri sul Mare), with none on Sundays. But the only buses back to Naples leave Amalfi at 5:45 a.m. (Monday to Saturday) and 6:20 a.m. (Monday to Friday), so the direct bus is useless for a day trip.

What fits in one day from Naples

Our honest plan, for a day in October while boats still run:

  1. 7:27 a.m. Circumvesuviana from Garibaldi, arriving in Sorrento at 8:41 a.m.
  2. SITA bus to Positano; two hours walking down to the beach and the church.
  3. Afternoon boat or bus to Amalfi: the cathedral and the old town.
  4. Bus back to Sorrento and the train to Naples, arriving late evening. The last direct train leaves Sorrento at 10:02 p.m.

Ravello does not fit comfortably in the same day. Buses along the coast fill up and run late when traffic is heavy; leave slack before your last connection. Our Amalfi Coast from Naples itinerary gives one-day and two-day versions with costs, and the Amalfi Coast boat day covers organized trips by sea.

Positano, Amalfi and Ravello: what to see

  • Positano: the town is the sight, a staircase of houses down to the Spiaggia Grande and the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta. SITA stops on the road above (Chiesa Nuova and Sponda); from there it is all downhill on foot, and uphill on the way back.
  • Amalfi: the cathedral of Sant'Andrea at the top of its steps, the Cloister of Paradise, and the paper-making valley behind the town. It is the coast's transport hub, with buses to Ravello and boats in season.
  • Ravello: 25 to 30 minutes by bus above Amalfi (€1.50). Villa Rufolo costs €8 (over 65 and ages 5 to 12, €6) and opens daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., last entry 6:30 p.m., from September 28, 2026; since May 2026 the Fondazione Ravello has run free guided tours, in English at 11 a.m., for ticket holders, up to 30 people. Villa Cimbrone's gardens are the other draw; we could not load its official page to confirm the 2026 fee.

Boats along the coast, and when they stop

Seen from the sea, the coast makes sense, and the boat avoids the bus queues. On the operators' pages:

  • Alilauro Sorrento-Positano: €19, April 1 to October 31.
  • Alilauro Sorrento-Amalfi: €17.50, April 1 to November 3.
  • NLG Positano-Capri and Amalfi-Capri: €24 each way, to November 3, 2026, plus the €5 Capri landing charge until October 31.

After the first days of November, the coast is served by SITA buses alone until spring. Rough seas can cancel boats at any time of year; keep the bus as your fallback. If you would rather base yourself for a few nights, Sorrento has the best connections.

Driving, drivers and tours

Driving the coast road yourself is slow and stressful in season, with narrow bends, buses and very limited, expensive parking in the towns. A private driver from Naples avoids the connections but is the most expensive option; prices are set privately and vary widely, so get a written quote that includes waiting time. Coach tours from Naples cover Positano and Amalfi in a long day and remove the planning, at the cost of fixed stops. By public transport, the train-plus-bus route above costs about €20 return with a CostieraSITA pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do the Amalfi Coast in a day from Naples?

Yes, but it is long: about 2 hours to Positano by train and bus, and close to 3 hours to Amalfi. Pick two towns, leave Naples by 7:30 a.m., and check the last train from Sorrento, 10:02 p.m. on the current timetable.

How do you get from Naples to Positano?

Take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento (69 minutes, €4.60), then a SITA bus to Positano (about 40 minutes, €2.40). Until October 31, Alilauro also sails Sorrento to Positano for €19.

Is there a direct bus from Naples to Amalfi?

Yes, one way. On SITA's timetable from September 14, 2026, buses leave Varco Immacolatella in the port of Naples at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturdays and 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, taking about 2 hours; none run on Sundays. The only return buses leave Amalfi at 5:45 and 6:20 a.m., so it does not work for a day trip.

How much is the SITA bus pass on the Amalfi Coast?

CostieraSITA costs €10 and gives unlimited SITA travel for 24 hours from first validation between Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast towns and Salerno. It is personal: write your name and date of birth on it.

When do Amalfi Coast ferries stop for the winter?

In 2026, Alilauro's Sorrento-Positano route runs until October 31 and Sorrento-Amalfi until November 3. NLG's Capri routes from Positano and Amalfi run until November 3. After that, SITA buses are the main link.

How much is Villa Rufolo in Ravello?

€8, or €6 for over-65s and children aged 5 to 12. It is open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., last entry 6:30 p.m., from September 28, 2026.
