New Year's Eve in Naples

December 31, 2026 Plebiscito concert is free No glass, no fireworks in squares

Naples marks Capodanno in two ways. Officially, the city stages a free concert in Piazza del Plebiscito and events along the seafront. Unofficially, much of the city sets off its own fireworks from balconies and streets at midnight. Both are loud. Only the first is legal in the squares.

The 2026-27 program was not announced when we checked on September 30, 2026. Last year the Comune presented it on December 15, so expect news in mid-December. Here is what the 2025-26 edition looked like, the rules the mayor imposed on the squares, and the plain facts on safety.

What happened last year

The Comune di Napoli ran four days of events from December 29, 2025 to January 1, 2026:

  • December 29: a concert at the PalaVesuvio arena, 8 p.m.
  • December 30: the final of a young artists' contest at the Alcott Arena, 8 p.m.
  • December 31: the main free concert in Piazza del Plebiscito. A contest for new acts began at 8 p.m.; the show proper started at 9:15 p.m. Elodie and Serena Brancale headlined, with Neapolitan names Gigi Finizio, Franco Ricciardi, Andrea Sannino, LDA and the DJ Daniele Decibel Bellini. Elodie sang straight after the countdown. Music also ran on the seafront around Rotonda Diaz and Piazza Vittoria from 10 p.m.
  • January 1: at noon, the That's Napoli Live Show choir sang New Year wishes in Piazza Municipio.

The mayor called the square "packed". Arrive by 9 p.m. if you want to be inside the square at midnight rather than in the streets around it.

The rules in the squares

For December 31, 2025, a mayoral ordinance applied from 6 p.m. in Piazza del Plebiscito, Piazza Municipio and along the Lungomare Caracciolo:

  • No selling or drinking from glass, cans, rigid plastic or cartons. Only light plastic or paper cups.
  • No sprays containing pepper extract.
  • No fireworks, firecrackers, bangers or rockets.

Expect the same, or close to it, for 2026-27. In practice it means buy drinks from the licensed stalls, leave the prosecco bottle at the hotel.

Fireworks: where to watch, and the honest risk

The official displays are on the seafront, around Castel dell'Ovo and Via Partenope. From the square or the waterfront you also see the rest of the city light up from dozens of neighborhoods at once. The best free view is from the Lungomare; the castle itself was closed to the public for restoration when we checked.

Now the part the brochures skip. Private fireworks are a Naples tradition and many are illegal. On the night into 2026, at least 57 people were injured by fireworks in Naples and its province, 42 in the city. That is a real number, not a reason to stay home. Stay in the ordinance area or indoors from about 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., avoid narrow side streets in the Quartieri Spagnoli and the old town at midnight, and keep children close. Our safety page puts it in context. You may have read about Neapolitans throwing old things out of windows at New Year; we found no recent reports of it. Fireworks are the hazard that gets reported every year.

Dinner, the day before and the day after

Book dinner early. Hotels on the Lungomare and Santa Lucia face the official display, so a sea-view room doubles as a grandstand.

Plan sightseeing around short days. In 2026 Cappella Sansevero closes at 2 p.m. on December 31, and Pio Monte della Misericordia at 2:30 p.m. On January 1, 2026 Sansevero opened from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; check its calendar for 2027. The city publishes a holiday timetable for ANM buses and metro with the program, so check it before you count on a late train. And if you arrive earlier in the season, see Christmas in Naples.
