Caffè Mexico
Caffè Mexico is the house bar of Passalacqua, a Naples coffee brand launched in 1948. You spot it by the orange: orange awning, orange sign reading MEXICO, and orange vintage Faema machines. It has three branches: Piazza Dante 86 in the center, Piazza Garibaldi 72 by the station, and Via Alessandro Scarlatti 69 on the Vomero. This page is about Piazza Dante.
The thing to know: the espresso comes already sweetened. The barista whips sugar with the first drops of coffee into a thick crema and pours the rest over it, into a scalding cup. If you want it bitter, say senza zucchero when you hand over your receipt. A 2026 guide puts a coffee at €1.20 to €2.

How to order
- Go to the cash desk first and say what you want: un caffè.
- Take the receipt to the bar. There is no orderly line; ease forward and hand it over.
- Say senza zucchero at that moment if you do not want sugar. Otherwise it arrives sweet.
- Drink the small glass of sparkling water first, to clear your palate, then the coffee.
The cups are served very hot. The Naples way, known as the three Cs (comm cazz coce, roughly "blisteringly hot"), is part of the point: a hot cup keeps the coffee from cooling as it lands. See our caffè napoletano page for the rest of the ritual.
Which branch?
Piazza Dante is the most useful: it sits on the square at the top of Via Toledo, on the way into the Centro Storico through Port'Alba. Piazza Garibaldi is the one for a coffee before a train from Napoli Centrale; see our station area page. The Vomero branch on Via Scarlatti is the favorite of Italy Segreta's local writer, and handy after the funicular up to Castel Sant'Elmo.
The blend
The regular coffee is Passalacqua's Moana blend, which Italy Segreta describes as a mix of 10 to 12 Arabica varieties, ground to order. Mexico's style is dark and strong, the traditional Neapolitan roast rather than the lighter single origins of the city's new specialty bars. If you prefer your coffee unsweetened and fruity, this is not the bar for you, and that is fine.
