La Masardona

Fried pizza €6, small one €3.50 Case Nuove, near the station Hours not published: check

La Masardona is named after Anna Manfredi, known as 'a Masardona, who started frying pizza in 1945 to get by after the war. Her family still runs it and calls it "la mamma della pizza fritta". The original shop is in Case Nuove, the working district next to Piazza Garibaldi and the station, at Via Giulio Cesare Capaccio 27.

On the Case Nuove menu the classic completa (provola, tomato, ricotta, cicoli, pepper and basil) costs €6. The same filling in the smaller battilocchio format, a trademark the family registered, costs €3.50. At the family's second Naples shop on Piazza Vittoria in Chiaia, the completa is €9 and the small one €4.50.

What to order

Order a battilocchio if you want to taste two or three fillings. It is the family's own small format, designed to be eaten walking. From the Case Nuove menu:

Fried starters are €2 each (potato crocchè with mozzarella, frittatina, ragù arancino) and a cuoppo of 12 bites is €6. On Tuesdays only there is pagnuttiello, a baked bread filled with cicoli, egg, pepper and pecorino, at €5.

There is also a short list of pizze aperte, open fried pizzas topped rather than folded: Primavera with rocket, datterino tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella (€7), Tonnino with red tuna (€8) and Palummiello with octopus salad, potatoes and lemon (€10). A Baladin craft beer is €5, a soft drink €2.50. Two people eating well, with a drink each, spend around €20.

Case Nuove or Piazza Vittoria?

The menus are close; the prices are not. Piazza Vittoria, at the start of the Chiaia seafront, adds about 50 percent: €9 for the completa against €6, €2.50 for a crocchè against €2. It is more convenient if you are staying in Chiaia or on the Lungomare, and it offers takeaway from its own menu.

Case Nuove is the original, and it is close to Napoli Centrale and the Circumvesuviana trains. That makes it the natural stop before or after a train to Pompeii or Herculaneum. The streets around the station are rough at the edges; see our station area page for a plain account.

When it is open

The family's website lists menus but no opening hours for either Naples shop. The last published schedule we found for Case Nuove is Dissapore's, from December 2022: closed Sunday, open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with evening opening on Saturday. Plan on lunch rather than dinner, and check the shop's current hours on its social pages or by phone before a special trip.
