Posillipo

The Gaiola: two islets off the Posillipo shore inside a protected marine area with Roman remains underwater. Access and swimming rules are set by the park and change with the season; our Posillipo, Marechiaro and the Gaiola walk covers booking and the path down.

Marechiaro: a small fishing village at the water with restaurants on the rocks, reached by a steep road. Parco Virgiliano: a public park on the headland with terraces over the sea, the island of Nisida and, on clear days, Capri and Ischia. Mergellina, at the foot of the ridge, is a harbor and the end point of the Lungomare walk from Castel dell'Ovo, 38 minutes from Plebiscito on foot.

The Mergellina funicular, opened in 1931, climbs from the harbor to Via Manzoni in Posillipo Alto, with stops at Sant'Antonio, San Gioacchino and Parco Angelina. At Mergellina you can connect to Line 6 of the metro, which reopened in July 2024 and runs through Chiaia to Municipio, and to Line 2. Line 6 runs every 14 minutes and at weekends only until early afternoon, per Wikipedia's summary of the ANM timetable. ANM buses run along Via Posillipo. In practice many visitors use taxis.

Walking times by OpenStreetMap foot routing show the scale: Mergellina station to Piazza del Plebiscito 38 minutes (2.9 km); Parco Virgiliano to Mergellina 80 minutes (6 km); Marechiaro to Parco Virgiliano 29 minutes (2.1 km), uphill. The roads are narrow and winding, often without pavements.

Posillipo is the one area where a car helps, but summer rules apply. For 2026 the city set a ZTL on Via Marechiaro from May 16 to September 27. The lower section toward Discesa Coroglio was closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays until June 28, every day from June 29 to September 13, and on weekends and holidays again until September 27. The city's ordinance adds that the gates can be switched on again in October 2026 if the local police report problems. Hotels, garages and workshops inside the zone can register customers' plates with ANM's Smartmobility system.

Posillipo has few hotels and many villas and apartments for rent. Hotel Paradiso, part of Best Western's Signature Collection at Via Catullo 11, is a four-star on the lower slope above Mergellina; its cheapest double was €237 on October 14, 2026 and €139 on November 11 on Kayak. The city tax since May 1, 2026 is €6 per person per night at four-star hotels and in short-let apartments, €5.50 at B&Bs.

For the same November money, the Hotel Il Convento in the Quartieri Spagnoli (€145 with breakfast) or the seafront four-stars on the Lungomare (from €151) put you within walking distance of the sights.

Posillipo is quiet and residential, with little nightlife beyond Mergellina's waterfront and the summer restaurants at Marechiaro. The main hazards are the roads: narrow, busy with cars and scooters, and short of pavements, so walk carefully and do not stop on bends. The UK government's general advice on petty crime in Italy still applies at crowded summer spots.

Stay here if your trip is a slow one: a villa or apartment with a view, a car or a taxi budget, swims in summer, and the city in small doses. Stay elsewhere on any trip built around sightseeing, day trips by train or ferry, or evenings in the old town: Chiaia gives you the sea and the metro without the distance.
