Pasticceria Poppella

Fiocco di neve about €1.50 Via Arena della Sanità 29 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (2020)

Poppella is the Scognamillo family's bakery in Rione Sanità, baking since the 1920s. Its historic shop is at Via Arena della Sanità 29, on the same street as Concettina ai Tre Santi. Ciro Scognamillo, the third generation, created the fiocco di neve, the "snowflake": a small round brioche filled with a cream of sheep's ricotta and milk cream and dusted with icing sugar.

It became a craze. In 2020 the family told Dissapore it sold around 10,000 a week, at €1 each. Gambero Rosso now gives the price as €1.50. In 2016 Poppella opened a second shop on Via Santa Brigida, off Via Toledo.

What to order

The original fiocco di neve. Chocolate and pistachio versions exist; Gambero Rosso's verdict is that the original is still unbeatable. Eat it fresh, as a street snack in three bites, which is how it was designed; Ciro Scognamillo has long told visitors not to carry it home.

Poppella also makes the standards. Dissapore's 2020 review found a generous, XL sfogliatella for €2, a babà for €1.50 and good mini sfogliatelle at €1.20. Coffee at the table was €3, lighter and longer than most in Naples.

Which shop?

Via Arena della Sanità 29 is the original, and the one to visit if you are in the Sanità for the catacombs or on our Rione Sanità walk. Via Santa Brigida is the convenient one if you are shopping on Via Toledo or near the Galleria. The fiocco is also sold through other outlets across the region, and many rival bakeries now make their own version, so it is not a pastry you have to hunt down.

The figures above are from Dissapore (2020) and Gambero Rosso (undated, current online). If you are making a special trip, check the family's social pages for the current hours.
