Chiaia

Chiaia also has many B&Bs and short-let apartments in its palazzi. The city tax is €5.50 per person per night at B&Bs and three-star hotels, and €6 in short-let apartments and at four- and five-star hotels, since May 1, 2026. Parker's sits above Chiaia on the hillside road; it has the best view in the city and the two-Michelin-star George, but you climb to reach it.

Chiaia is the Naples of well-dressed residents, galleries, wine bars and pastry shops rather than street shrines and washing lines. Streets are wider than in the old town, and the district is mostly flat toward the sea, climbing steeply toward Piazza Amedeo and the Vomero. The Villa Comunale is the long public garden between the Riviera di Chiaia and the sea, a place for a morning run or an evening stroll.

The evening scene is the draw. Around Vico Belledonne and Via Bisignano, bars spill into the lanes from early evening. The flip side is noise: rooms over the bar lanes are loud on Friday and Saturday nights.

Chiaia is better served than it used to be. Line 6, reopened on July 17, 2024 after an 11-year closure, has stations at San Pasquale and Chiaia-Monte di Dio, and runs to Municipio for Line 1 and the ferries. It runs every 14 minutes, from 7:10 a.m. to 9:10 p.m. on weekdays but only until 2:50 p.m. at weekends, according to Wikipedia's summary of the ANM timetable. Line 2 stops at Piazza Amedeo, and the Chiaia funicular climbs from Parco Margherita to Via Cimarosa on the Vomero.

By OpenStreetMap foot routing from Piazza dei Martiri: Piazza del Plebiscito 11 minutes (830 m), Molo Beverello 23 minutes (1.7 km) and Piazza del Gesu Nuovo 27 minutes (2 km). The Villa Comunale is 20 minutes from Plebiscito. Napoli Centrale is more than 50 minutes on foot; take Line 2 from Piazza Amedeo.

Chiaia has three limited-traffic rules. The Belledonne-Martiri-Poerio ZTL is active from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day. On Saturdays, Via dei Mille, Via Filangieri, Via Santa Caterina a Chiaia, Via Morelli and Via Santa Maria a Cappella Vecchia close from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. And from December 8 to January 6 the Morelli-Filangieri-Mille ZTL adds weekend and holiday closures, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hotel guests can be authorized, but only through the hotel.

Chiaia's main streets stay busy into the evening, with residents out shopping, eating and drinking. Stay here on a second visit, a longer stay, a trip with a focus on food, drink and shopping, or if you want the seafront nearby without paying Via Partenope prices. It also suits families who want wider pavements, and travellers who plan to spend evenings on the seafront or dine at George. Budget travellers can do well here too: the three-star Chiaja Hotel de Charme was €95 on our November date. Stay elsewhere if it is a short first trip built on the old town and the museums: from the Centro Storico or Via Toledo you will save an hour a day.
