The lemons of the Sorrento peninsula grow under tall pergolas of chestnut poles, traditionally roofed with pagliarelle, woven covers that protect the trees from the weather while letting light through. The local oval variety is protected as Limone di Sorrento IGP, and it is the lemon behind the best limoncello. Several groves in and around Sorrento open for guided visits with tastings.
On GetYourGuide on September 30, 2026, La Limonaia's garden tour with jam and limoncello tasting cost €40, including hotel pickup, and lasts 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. A hands-on limoncello workshop with Cucinammore cost €59 for an hour. If all you want is a good bottle, the grower I Giardini di Cataldo sells 50 cl for €15.

What a grove visit shows you
- The pergolas: chestnut poles roofed with pagliarelle, the traditional covers that I Giardini di Cataldo calls a masterpiece of local craft. Young trees are planted about two years after grafting, the farm says.
- The fruit: the "Ovale di Sorrento", with a thick, fragrant peel full of oil glands, which is what gives limoncello its perfume.
- The products: limoncello and other citrus liqueurs, jams, candied peel. Tastings end at the shop counter.

Is there a free version?
We could not confirm a free, scheduled grove visit in Sorrento. I Giardini di Cataldo, a working citrus farm on Via Correale in the town, advertises guided tours of its grove with tastings but does not publish a price, so ask at its shop. Some shops in the center pour a sample of limoncello before you buy; that is a sales tasting, not a tour, and we did not survey which ones. Read the label before paying, as our limoncello page explains. The cheapest honest option is to buy a bottle from a grower: €15 for 50 cl at Cataldo, where fennel, orange and mandarin liqueurs are also €15–€20.
Getting there from Naples
- Train: the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento takes 69 minutes on the fast trains, €4.60. The Campania Express tourist train is suspended from October 1, 2026.
- Ferry: Alilauro from Molo Beverello, €19 each way, until November 3, 2026.
- Hotel pickup: La Limonaia's listing includes pickup in Sorrento, not from Naples.
