Capri in a day from Naples

Naples has two ports for Capri. Caremar's ferries and fast ferries leave from Calata Porta di Massa; NLG's jets and SNAV leave from Molo Beverello, by Piazza Municipio. On Caremar's timetable for Thursday October 8, 2026:

Take the 7:55 a.m. ferry: it is the cheapest boat and lands you at about 9:17 a.m. Add the €5 landing contribution. Coming back, do not repeat the ferry: the last slow ferry leaves Capri at 2:30 p.m. Book nothing in advance with Caremar unless the day is a summer weekend: the 12% presale surcharge buys you nothing in October. At Marina Grande, the boat companies know by about 9 a.m. whether the rowers are working. If they are, go now. Laser Capri runs transfers to the Blue Grotto from Pier 23 about every 30 minutes from 9 a.m., from €25 return; if the wait at the cave passes 45 minutes, its boat turns back and your ticket is valid on a later run. Its terms say there is no refund if the grotto is closed.

At the cave mouth you pay the state entry, €6 (€2 for EU citizens 18 to 24, free under 18), and the rowboat, €12, bought separately. You lie back in the boat, pass a gap about a meter high, and have about five minutes inside. From October 16 the grotto is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; until October 15, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes whenever the sea makes the entrance unsafe, and nobody publishes how often.

1. 11:15 a.m. Funicular from Marina Grande to the Piazzetta, €2.40.
2. 11:30 a.m. Walk to Villa Jovis. About 45 minutes on footpaths, uphill in places, to Tiberius's palace 334 m above the sea. €6; open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until October 15, then 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., last entry 30 minutes before. It has the best view on the island for the price and few people.
3. 2 p.m. Lunch near the Piazzetta. Capri restaurants rarely publish prices online, and we found no current menu we could check. The island's own portal, capri.com, puts a meal and a glass of wine at Pescheria Le Botteghe, a fishmonger with tables a few steps from the Piazzetta, at about €25 a head. Budget that, and expect more at a sit-down restaurant.
4. 3:30 p.m. Gardens of Augustus. About €2.50 (capri.com; the official page shows no price). Open 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. until October 15, then to 6:30 p.m. to November 3. The Certosa di San Giacomo next door is €10. Do not plan to walk down Via Krupp: its status is unclear and capri.com calls it closed.
5. 5:15 p.m. Funicular down (€2.40) and a drink at the port.
6. 6:45 p.m. NLG's last jet to Beverello, €25. No landing fee on the way back. If you miss it, Caremar's fast ferry leaves at 8:17 p.m. and arrives 8:57 p.m. (€21.50).

Combined ticket. The €15 Capri ticket covers Villa Jovis, the Certosa, Casa Rossa and the grotto's €6 entry (the rowboat stays extra). With the grotto and Jovis alone it costs €3 more than paying separately; add the Certosa and it saves €7. The museum FAQ says the grotto part is valid to October 31; its rules PDF says October 1, so ask at the desk.

If the grotto is shut or you would rather skip it, keep the 7:55 a.m. ferry, go up by funicular and walk to Villa Jovis first (it opens at 10 a.m.). After lunch, take the bus to Anacapri (€2.40 a ride) and ride the Monte Solaro chairlift to 589 m: 13 minutes, €15 return, 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April to October with the last descent at 5:30 p.m., 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in November. Villa San Michele (€12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in October) is the one to drop if time is short. Take the bus straight down to Marina Grande for the 6:45 p.m. jet.

This version costs about €201 for two: the same boats, lunch, Jovis and gardens, plus buses and the chairlift instead of the grotto and its boat.

• October 16: the grotto shortens to 9 a.m.–2 p.m.; Villa Jovis closes at 4 p.m. This plan still works if you go to the grotto first.
• November 1: the landing contribution halves to €2.50.
• After November 3: NLG's summer timetable ends. On last winter's pattern it runs four crossings each way, so check its winter return times before you go. We have not checked Caremar's winter timetable; confirm your last boat on the day.
• November: the chairlift runs 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Gardens of Augustus close at 4:30 p.m. from November 4 (capri.com). Rough seas cancel more boats, so do not put Capri on the day before your flight.
• November 1–30, 2026: Capodichino airport is closed for runway works and some flights move to Salerno airport (QSR); see getting to Naples.
