Pastiera
The pastiera is Naples' Easter tart: a shortcrust shell filled with ricotta, grano cotto (whole wheat berries cooked soft), eggs, sugar and candied citrus peel, baked under a lattice of pastry strips. It is dense, moist and chewy, and Neapolitans say it is better the day after it is baked.
You do not need to come at Easter. On September 30, 2026, SfogliateLab's shop listed an 800 g pastiera at €24 (down from €26), a large one at €28 and a box of two single-portion pastierine at €8. Scaturchio's online shop sells an 18.5 cm pastiera in a travel tin, for 8–10 people, at €39.

Easter and the rest of the year
In Holy Week every home and pastry shop makes pastiera, and orders at the famous shops fill up days ahead. If you are in Naples for Easter, order yours early and pick it up on Saturday. The rest of the year you can walk in and buy a slice. Our Easter page covers the week's food and processions, including the savory casatiello that sits beside the pastiera on the Easter table.
What is in it
- Grano cotto: soft cooked wheat berries, sold in jars in Naples for the purpose, then simmered again with milk.
- Ricotta: sheep's milk or mixed, beaten smooth with sugar and eggs.
- Candied peel of citron and orange, and a scent of orange-flower water or cinnamon, depending on the family.
- The lattice: strips of shortcrust over the top.
The Cantina del Vesuvio winery serves pastiera "made with ricotta, grano cotto and candied fruit" as the dessert of its tasting lunch, a good way to eat it in context (see our wine tasting page).
Carrying it home
- Shops ship it across Italy by courier, which tells you it keeps for days. That makes it one of the few Naples pastries worth packing.
- A whole tart in a tin (Scaturchio's travel version) survives a suitcase better than a paper box.
- It is a solid, so it is not subject to liquid rules; check your destination's rules on dairy.
For the other two pastries every shop is judged on, see sfogliatella and babà.
