Piazza Garibaldi and the station
Piazza Garibaldi is the big square in front of Napoli Centrale, the main railway station. It is the city's transport hub: high-speed trains to Rome, the Circumvesuviana to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, metro Lines 1 and 2, and buses in every direction. It is also, plainly, a rough-edged place: crowded, loud with traffic, with the mix of travellers, street sellers and people waiting around that big stations everywhere attract.
The hotels reflect that. On Kayak on September 30, 2026, four-star doubles on and around the square cost €183 to €318 for October 14, 2026 and €105 to €161 for November 11, room only. Those are the lowest four-star prices we found anywhere in Naples. Whether that is a bargain depends entirely on your trip.

Who should stay here, and who should not
Stay here if:
- You arrive late or leave early by train, and want to walk to the platform.
- Your trip is built on day trips: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast by train and bus, or Caserta.
- Price matters more than atmosphere, and you are comfortable in a busy, unpolished big-city setting.
- You are a confident traveller who would take the metro in any European city without thinking about it.
Do not stay here if:
- It is your first trip and you want to walk out into the old town, the seafront or a pretty piazza.
- You are travelling for romance or a special occasion.
- You would feel uneasy walking back through a crowded transport square at night, or with young children in tow after dark.
- You plan to be out late in the Centro Storico every night and walk home.
For those trips, the old town is only one metro stop away and costs little more: the Decumani sold doubles with breakfast for €190 on November 11.
Hotels and what they cost
| Hotel (four-star, Kayak) | October 14, 2026 | November 11, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Starhotels Terminus, Piazza Garibaldi 91 | €247 | €141 |
| UNA Hotels Napoli, Piazza Garibaldi 9/10 | €318 | €158 |
| Hotel Vergilius Billia, Via Pica | €183 | €105 |
All three prices are the cheapest double shown, one night, two adults, taxes and fees included. Add the city tax, €6 per person per night at four-star hotels since May 1, 2026. If you want a palazzo rather than a chain hotel within walking distance of the trains, Palazzo Caracciolo on Via Carbonara is 15 minutes (1.1 km) from Napoli Centrale on foot, but charged €307 to €337.
Safety around the station, stated plainly
The honest summary: the risks here are theft and hassle, as at big stations across Europe. The UK government's travel advice for Italy tells visitors to take care in main train and metro stations, where pickpocketing and bag-snatching happen, and warns about thieves using distraction. That fits Piazza Garibaldi. For context, Il Sole 24 Ore's 2025 crime index, on 2024 Interior Ministry figures, ranked the province of Naples 10th in Italy for reported crimes per resident, with Milan first.
What that means in practice:
- Keep your phone in a front pocket or in your hand, not on a cafe table, and your bag zipped and in front of you on the metro and the Circumvesuviana.
- Ignore offers of help with luggage or tickets inside the station; buy from machines or staffed counters.
- Take only official white taxis from the rank.
- After dark, use Line 1 or a taxi for the old town rather than walking the side streets west of the square.
None of this is a reason to panic, and most visitors pass through without trouble. See Is Naples safe? for the full picture.
What is here worth your time
More than the reputation suggests. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele is a few minutes' walk from the square, and La Masardona, the pizza fritta institution, is in the same district. Porta Nolana's street fish market is 9 minutes from the station on foot, and Porta Capuana, one of the old city gates, is nearby. The Duomo is one metro stop away.
Transport from the square
Line 1's Garibaldi station runs west to Duomo (one stop), Universita (two) and Municipio (three) for the ferries, then Toledo, Dante and Museo. Line 1 also runs east to Centro Direzionale, opened in April 2025; the extension to Capodichino airport is still under construction, with opening expected in 2027; the airport itself is closed for runway works from November 1 to 30, 2026 (see getting to Naples). Line 2 crosses the city to Piazza Amedeo and Mergellina. The Circumvesuviana's Napoli Garibaldi stop is under the square. Single ANM tickets for the metro, funiculars and city buses were €1.30 on UnicoCampania's published fare table; from October 1, 2026 the integrated Unico fares rise, while ANM and EAV keep their own tickets unchanged; the new integrated prices were unpublished on September 30.
Before an early train, check the strike calendar. On September 30, 2026 the transport ministry listed a rail stoppage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 2, an EAV strike in Naples from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on October 16, and a general strike covering rail from 9 p.m. on December 3 to 9 p.m. on December 4.
