Getting around Naples
Central Naples is best on foot. From Piazza del Plebiscito it is about 13 minutes' walk to Gesù Nuovo and the start of Spaccanapoli, and the whole old town fits in a walk of under 3 km (2 miles). You need transport for three things: the station and the port at either end of the center, the hill of Vomero, and the museums on the edge, such as Capodimonte. For those, the city has Metro Line 1, four funiculars, buses and taxis with fixed fares.
Tickets are cheap but changing. From October 1, 2026, the Campania region raises the price of integrated UnicoCampania singles, hourly tickets and urban day tickets. ANM, the city company that runs the metro and funiculars, has kept its own tickets unchanged: a single ride is still €1.30. The new integrated prices had not been published by September 30, so this page gives the old ones and says so. Everything else comes from ANM, EAV, UnicoCampania and the city council, checked on September 30, 2026.

Walk first: what is close to what
These are flat-ground walking times from OpenStreetMap routing. Naples has hills and steps, so add a few minutes where the map climbs.
| From | To | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| Piazza Municipio | Molo Beverello (ferries) | 7 min, 497 m |
| Piazza Municipio | Piazza del Plebiscito | 9 min, 651 m |
| Piazza Municipio | Gesù Nuovo | 13 min, 950 m |
| Piazza Bellini | MANN | 9 min, 653 m |
| Napoli Centrale | Gesù Nuovo | 28 min, 2.1 km |
| Piazza dei Martiri (Chiaia) | Piazza del Plebiscito | 11 min, 825 m |
| Castel dell'Ovo | Piazza del Plebiscito | 15 min, 1.1 km |
Pavements are narrow in the old town and scooters share the lanes, so wear shoes with grip and keep to the side. For a first orientation, the Spaccanapoli and decumani walk covers most of what you came for in one loop.
Metro Line 1: the one you will use
Line 1 runs from Centro Direzionale through Garibaldi (the central station), Duomo, Università, Municipio, Toledo, Dante and Museo (for the MANN), then climbs to Vanvitelli in Vomero and on to Piscinola in the north. Several stations are part of the Art Stations project, and Toledo alone is worth the €1.30.
- Hours (ANM): Sunday to Thursday, first train 6:15 a.m. and last 11 p.m. from Centro Direzionale; Friday and Saturday the last train leaves Centro Direzionale at 1:32 a.m.
- Frequency: every 10 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., every 14 minutes after that.
- Works: Line 1 closed early on several evenings in June, July and September 2026 for works, and some stations have escalators or lifts out of service. Check ANM's notices before counting on a late train.
A station at Capodichino airport is under construction and expected in 2027; until then, use the Alibus (and note the airport is closed for runway works from November 1 to 30, 2026). Line 6 links Municipio with Chiaia, Mergellina and Mostra (the stadium area). ANM's page lists a limited service, first train 7:36 a.m. and last 2:50 p.m. from Municipio, every 14 minutes, so do not plan an evening around it.
Line 2 is a Trenitalia train, not ANM. It crosses the city from Garibaldi through Piazza Cavour, Montesanto, Piazza Amedeo and Mergellina to Campi Flegrei, the station for the stadium. A report in June 2026 said the section on to Pozzuoli was suspended; we could not confirm the current status, so check Trenitalia before you rely on it for Pozzuoli. The EAV Cumana railway from Montesanto reopened in full to Pozzuoli on September 11, 2026 after quake damage, with a new Pozzuoli station: see Campi Flegrei.
The four funiculars up to Vomero and Posillipo
Four funiculars climb the hill behind the center. All take the €1.30 ANM ticket or a contactless card. Hours below are as ANM's pages list them on September 30, 2026:
| Funicular | Runs between | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Centrale | Augusteo (off Via Toledo) and Piazza Fuga, Vomero | From 7 a.m.; last run 10:30 p.m. Mon–Tue, 12:30 a.m. Wed, Thu and Sun, 2 a.m. Fri–Sat; every 10 min |
| Chiaia | Parco Margherita (Chiaia) and Via Cimarosa, Vomero | From 7 a.m.; last run 10:30 p.m. Wed–Thu, 12:30 a.m. Sun–Tue, 2 a.m. Fri–Sat; every 10 min |
| Montesanto | Montesanto and Via Morghen, Vomero | 7 a.m.–10 p.m., every 10 min |
| Mergellina | Mergellina and Via Manzoni, Posillipo | 7 a.m.–10 p.m., every 10 min |
The Centrale is the busiest and the most useful for visitors. Montesanto's top station is the closest to Castel Sant'Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino. The best way to use them is one way: ride up, then walk down the Pedamentina steps, as in our Vomero and Pedamentina walk.
Tickets, prices and contactless
Naples has two families of tickets. ANM company tickets are valid only on ANM buses, Lines 1 and 6 and the funiculars. Integrated UnicoCampania tickets also cover Line 2 and the EAV trains within the city. From the published fare table (valid from May 6, 2024) and the October notices:
| Ticket | Price | From October 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| ANM single ride (one vehicle) | €1.30 | Unchanged |
| ANM day ticket | €4.50 | Unchanged |
| Integrated 90-minute ticket, city | €1.80 | Rises, new price not published |
| Integrated day ticket, city | €5.40 | Rises, new price not published |
| 7-day pass, ANM / integrated | €13.50 / €16.20 | Unchanged (passes do not rise) |
Buy paper tickets at tobacconists and newsstands, at machines in metro and funicular stations, or in the UnicoCampania app. Tickets bought before October 1 stay valid until you use them, so there is no need to rush. Validate every ticket when you board.
Easier still: Tap&Go lets you pay with a contactless bank card or phone at the gates of Line 1, Line 6, the funiculars, the Alibus and the EAV railways. On EAV lines you must tap out as well as in, with the same card, or you are charged the maximum fare; EAV says the system then charges the cheapest combination of singles, hourly and day tickets for your day. Prepaid PostePay Visa cards are not accepted. The Campania Artecard includes transport in some versions: see is the Artecard worth it?
Taxis inside the city: use the fixed fares
The city publishes fixed fares per car, including luggage, night, holiday and radio-call supplements. Ask for the tariffa predeterminata when you get in; the driver must accept, write you a receipt and show F0.00 on the meter. Some useful ones:
- Stazione Centrale to the old town (ZTL) €11; to Molo Beverello €15.50; to Via Partenope hotels €17.50; to Capodimonte €15.50.
- Molo Beverello to Via Partenope €10; to the old town €11; to the MANN €13; to San Martino €18.50.
- Via Partenope hotels to the MANN €15.50; to Capodimonte €17.50.
On the meter, a weekday ride from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. starts at €4, a Sunday, holiday or night ride at €7.50, and the minimum is €5; calling a radio taxi adds €1.70. The city's own example, a 5 km weekday trip with 5 minutes of waiting, comes to €12.10. For the airport, see getting to Naples.
Strikes and closures on the calendar
Italian transport strikes are announced in advance on the Ministry of Transport's list. On September 30, 2026 it showed a national multi-sector strike on October 2 (rail 11 a.m.–2 p.m.), an EAV rail staff strike in Naples on October 16 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., and a general strike from 9 p.m. on December 3 to 9 p.m. on December 4. On strike days, guaranteed services still run at the start and end of the day; check the operator's site the evening before. For trains to Pompeii and Sorrento, read the Circumvesuviana guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a metro ticket in Naples?
An ANM single ride on Line 1, Line 6, a funicular or a city bus costs €1.30, and ANM has kept that price from October 1, 2026. The integrated 90-minute UnicoCampania ticket was €1.80 until September 30 and rises from October 1; the new price had not been published.
Can I pay for the Naples metro with a contactless card?
Yes. Tap&Go works at the gates of Line 1, Line 6, the four funiculars, the Alibus and EAV trains. Use the same card to tap in and, on EAV lines, to tap out, or you pay the maximum fare.
What time does the Naples metro close?
ANM lists the last Line 1 train from Centro Direzionale at 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 1:32 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Line 1 has closed early on some evenings in 2026 for works, so check ANM notices.
Do I need public transport in Naples?
Less than you think. The old town, Via Toledo, Plebiscito and the seafront are all walkable. Use Line 1 for the station, the MANN and Vomero, a funicular for the hill, and the fixed-fare taxis for late nights.
Are taxis in Naples expensive?
Not if you ask for the fixed fare. Station to the old town is €11 per car and Molo Beverello to the seafront hotels €10, luggage included. On the meter, a daytime weekday ride starts at €4.
