The Amalfi Coast from Naples

1. 6:51 a.m. Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Sorrento, arriving 8:06 a.m. A single is €4.60 (EAV's own fare, unchanged on October 1, 2026); our Circumvesuviana guide explains the line. The 7:27 a.m. arrives at 8:41 a.m. and misses the bus below.
2. 8:30 a.m. SITA bus from Sorrento station toward Amalfi. It reaches Positano (Chiesa Nuova) at 9:10 a.m. Fare €2.40. Sit on the right for the sea. Buses fill up and run late in traffic, so the first bus of the day is the one to be on.
3. 9:15 a.m. to noon: Positano. The town is the sight: walk down the lanes to the Spiaggia Grande and the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta. It is all steps down, and all steps back up to the road.

By boat instead. Until October 31, Alilauro sails Sorrento to Positano for €19. It is the better view and avoids the bus queue, at eight times the bus fare. See our Amalfi Coast boat day for organized trips.

1. 12:20 p.m. SITA from Positano (Chiesa Nuova) to Amalfi, arriving 1:10 p.m. Fare €2.40.
2. 1:15 p.m. Lunch at Trattoria Da Gemma, Via Fra Gerardo Sasso 11, off the cathedral square, open since 1872. Lunch 12 noon to 2:30 p.m.; closed Wednesdays. Its online menu shows what Amalfi costs: Nonna Gemma's genovese €29, scialatielli with clams €30, fried fish €32. Two pastas and water is a fair lunch here. We found no cheaper Amalfi menu with published prices.
3. 2:45 p.m. The cathedral of Sant'Andrea at the top of its steps and the Cloister of Paradise, then the lanes behind the town toward the old paper mills. The lemons on every stall are the sfusato amalfitano; bottles of limoncello are worth buying only from a maker who names them.
4. 4 p.m. SITA from Amalfi back toward Sorrento, via Positano, arriving 5:40 p.m. Fare €3.40.
5. 5:50 p.m. Train from Sorrento, arriving Garibaldi 7 p.m. If the bus is late, the 6:26 p.m. arrives at 7:43 p.m.; the last train leaves Sorrento at 10:02 p.m.

Alternatively, Alilauro's Amalfi to Sorrento boat (€17.50) runs to November 3. Whatever you choose, leave 30 minutes of slack before your last connection.

Day 1 (Monday to Friday). SITA runs a direct Naples to Amalfi bus from the Varco Immacolatella port gate at 9 a.m., arriving 11 a.m. along the eastern coast through Vietri and Maiori. The fare band is €6.10. On its timetable from September 14, 2026, other direct buses leave at 2:30 p.m. (Monday to Friday), 2 p.m. (Saturday) and 5:30 p.m. (Monday to Saturday, marked as a connection at Vietri sul Mare); none on Sunday. The only buses back to Naples leave Amalfi at 5:45 and 6:20 a.m., which is why it is one way only.

• 11 a.m. Amalfi's cathedral and cloister; lunch at Da Gemma.
• 3 p.m. SITA to Ravello, 25 to 30 minutes, €1.50. Villa Rufolo, €8 (over 65 and ages 5 to 12, €6), open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with last entry at 6:30 p.m. from September 28, 2026. We could not load Villa Cimbrone's official page to confirm its fee.
• Evening. Back down to Amalfi and sleep on the coast. We have not priced coast hotels, so the hotel is not in the totals.

Day 2. The 9:30 a.m. SITA from Amalfi reaches Positano (Chiesa Nuova) at 10:20 a.m. (€2.40). Spend the morning there, then take a bus on to Sorrento, about 50 minutes (the 1:50 p.m. arrives at 2:40 p.m.; €2.40), and the train home (€4.60). Or return the other way: SITA Amalfi to Salerno is €2.80 and the regional train Salerno to Naples €5.50 on UnicoCampania's single-company fare.

On a weekend, reach Amalfi through Sorrento as in the one-day plan. If you would rather base yourself longer, read Naples or Sorrento as a base.

• October 31: Alilauro's Sorrento-Positano boats end. November 3: its Sorrento-Amalfi boats and NLG's Amalfi-Capri boats end (for Capri from Naples, see our Capri day plan). After that the coast is buses only until spring.
• The SITA timetable in force from September 14, 2026 keeps the 8:30 a.m. Sorrento bus and the 4 p.m. Amalfi return used here; check for a new timetable before a winter trip.
• Daylight shortens fast: sunset in the Bay of Naples is about 6:24 p.m. on October 15 and 4:46 p.m. in mid-November, so the afternoon bus ride back is in the dark.
• SITA marks every run with a day code: G daily, F Monday to Saturday, L Monday to Friday, 6 Saturday only, H Sundays and holidays. Check that the bus you plan on runs on your day.
• Rough seas can cancel boats at any time of year; keep the bus as your fallback.
• November 1–30, 2026: Capodichino airport is closed for runway works and some flights move to Salerno airport (QSR); see getting to Naples.

Fares are UnicoCampania's single-company fares; the new integrated prices from October 1, 2026 were unpublished when we checked. The Unico app sells tickets, which saves hunting for a tobacconist before the bus. Organized boat days from Naples were about €97 a person on GetYourGuide on September 30, 2026; the boat from Marina del Cantone, near Sorrento, was €60.
