Campania Teatro Festival
The Campania Teatro Festival is the region's international performing-arts festival, run by the Fondazione Campania dei Festival for the Regione Campania. It was launched in 2007, and many Neapolitans still call it by its old name, the Napoli Teatro Festival. Since 2017 its artistic director has been the writer and director Ruggero Cappuccio. The 2026 edition, the 19th, ran for 31 days from June 12 to July 12.
It is not a fringe. It produces its own shows and invites foreign companies, and much of it happens in the courtyards and gardens of Palazzo Reale on Piazza del Plebiscito. The festival's pricing policy is deliberately low: €8 a ticket, €5 if you are under 30. The 2027 dates were not out when we checked on September 30, 2026. Here is how 2026 worked.

What the 2026 festival offered
The theme was "Universo di Pace", a universe of peace. The program ran across nine sections: International, Italian drama, Dance, Music, the Observatory for emerging companies, Literature, SportOpera (sport meets performance), Exhibitions and Special Projects. When it closed on July 12, the festival counted over 150 events, 67 premieres and 40,000 spectators in 16 venues across Campania.
One special project returns each year: Il Sogno Reale. I Borbone di Napoli, stories of the Bourbon court staged at 9 p.m. in the Cortile delle Carrozze of Palazzo Reale. In 2026 it was in its fifth edition.
The free parts: the garden and the exhibitions
Two things cost nothing. Every evening from 7:30 p.m., the DopoFestival opened a listening bar with live music in the Giardino Romantico of Palazzo Reale, the palace garden. It is the easiest way to feel the festival without a ticket.
The festival's photo exhibitions opened on June 12 at 7 p.m. in Vico Mauriello, on the right side of Palazzo Reale's Cortile d'Onore, and stayed up to July 12 with free entry. In 2026 there were three: portraits and places by Salvatore Liguori, Romeo Civilli's pictures of Syria, and Salvatore Pastore's jazz photographs.
Tickets and how to buy them
- Price: the festival describes a full ticket at €8 and €5 for under-30s, with free tickets for some social categories. That is its long-standing policy; we could not load the 2026 tariff page, so confirm the price on each event's page.
- When: in 2026 sales opened on Friday, June 5 at 11 a.m., one week before the first show.
- Where: online on the event pages, or at the central box office at the Universita Suor Orsola Benincasa, Via Chiaia 45-47, a short walk from Piazza del Plebiscito.
- Artecard: in 2026 holders of the Campania Artecard could see one Sogno Reale show free at the central box office, while places lasted.
What to choose if you do not speak Italian
Most drama in the Italian section is performed in Italian, so do not count on surtitles. Choose from the Dance and Music sections, and from international productions where the listing states the language. Outdoor shows in Palazzo Reale's courtyards are also the most pleasant on a hot night.
If you want a grander night out, the opera season at the Teatro di San Carlo next door is the other option: see an opera night at San Carlo. The festival costs a fraction of that.
Practical notes
Outdoor events can be canceled at short notice. In 2026 the festival canceled a performance on June 26, a concert on June 30, and a show plus the DopoFestival on July 2, each announced the same day on its news page. Check that page before you set out.
Late June and July are hot, and evening shows end late. Pair a festival night with an aperitivo in Chiaia, and see the best time to visit for what summer in Naples is like.
