Kayaking along Posillipo

€35 for 2 hours Via Posillipo 68 Swimmers aged 15 and up

From the land, Posillipo is a road lined with walls and villa gates. From the water it is a coast of yellow tuff cliffs, sea caves, Roman ruins and small coves, and a kayak gets you close. The best-reviewed option on GetYourGuide, Kasa Kayak's 2-hour tour for €35, starts at Via Posillipo 68 and paddles to Marechiaro, the Gaiola islet and Trentaremi bay, with a snorkel mask for the clear water around the Gaiola. It had 4.9 stars from 53 reviews on September 30, 2026.

You must be able to swim, be at least 15, and weigh no more than 118 kg. The listing includes the kayak, a dry bag, water, the mask, instructors who speak Italian, English and Spanish, and a shower and changing room afterward. Parking is extra.

What you see

  • Marechiaro: the old fishing hamlet at the foot of Posillipo, reached by land down a long lane.
  • The Gaiola: a small island joined by a footbridge, inside the Gaiola underwater park. The listing promises a transparent seabed, tuff walls, caves and remains of Roman villas.
  • Trentaremi bay: the cove below the Pausilypon, the Roman villa complex. The Pausilypon site on land is closed from October 1, 2026 for restoration and safety works, so the sea is the only way to see this stretch for now.

The options

Kasa Kayak, "wild kayak tour Posillipo"€352 h4.9 from 53
Sunset kayak tour with aperitif, Naples€352 h3.6 from 20
Private sunset kayak with guide and aperitif, Sorrento€1203 hNew, no rating

GetYourGuide prices, September 30, 2026. The Naples sunset tour costs the same as the day tour but has a much weaker rating; we would book the day tour. If you want sunset on the water without paddling, see our sunset cruise page.

The Gaiola underwater park

The Gaiola is a marine protected area with its own access rules. On land, entry to the park is free but controlled: from May to September you book online for morning or afternoon slots; from October to April you register at the gate or online, up to 200 people, and the park closes on weather-alert days. Ask your kayak guide how close the tour goes and where you may swim. To visit on foot, follow our Posillipo, Marechiaro and Gaiola walk.

When to go

  • Season: the listing shows availability through the year, but the sea decides. Book a morning slot if you can, so a cancelled trip can move to the afternoon or the next day.
  • Daylight: by our calculation for Naples, the sun sets at about 6:46 p.m. on October 1, 6:24 p.m. on October 15, and 5:08 p.m. after the clocks go back on October 25. In mid-July it sets about 8:34 p.m.
  • Weather: the listing warns the tour is unsuitable for anyone prone to seasickness. If the operator cancels for wind or waves, rebook rather than push.

Is it for you?

  • Yes if you swim confidently, like being on the water and want to see the Roman ruins and caves that you cannot reach from the road.
  • Families: only with teenagers aged 15 or older. For younger children, a boat trip with a swim stop is the alternative.
  • No if you have back problems or get seasick, as the listing itself warns.
  • Snorkelers: the mask is included; the clearest water on the route is around the Gaiola.

What to bring and how to get there

  • Swimsuit worn under your clothes, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and shoes you can get wet.
  • Phone and keys go in the dry bag provided.
  • Via Posillipo is the coast road climbing west from Mergellina. A taxi from the center is simplest; by bus, check routes on our getting around page; by car, use the paid guarded car park the operator mentions.
  • Afterward, eat by the water at Marechiaro or walk down to Mergellina and the Lungomare.
