Naples in 2 days

Follow the one-day plan. In short:

• 8:30 a.m. Sfogliatella and espresso in Piazza Dante.
• 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gesù Nuovo, the Santa Chiara cloister (€7), Cappella Sansevero at a booked 10:30 a.m. slot (€12), San Gregorio Armeno, Pio Monte della Misericordia (€10) and the Duomo.
• 1 p.m. Pizza at Da Michele, €6.50 a pizza.
• 3 p.m. Napoli Sotterranea (€18), then Via Toledo, Plebiscito and the Lungomare at sunset.
• 8 p.m. Dinner at Osteria della Mattonella.

Day one costs about €191 for two.

Go down to Napoli Garibaldi, under the main station, and take the 8:08 a.m. Sorrento train. It is a direttissimo that reaches Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri at 8:37 a.m. A single is €3.30; EAV keeps its own fares unchanged when the integrated Unico fares rise on October 1, 2026 (the new integrated prices were unpublished on September 30). The €15 Campania Express tourist train is suspended from October 1, so ignore anyone selling it.

The station is 211 m from the Porta Marina gate. Buy Pompeii+ at €25, not the €20 Express: it adds the Villa of the Mysteries, which on an Express ticket costs €8 more at the Porta Ercolano gate, card only. Tickets carry your name and there is no exit and re-entry.

1. 9 a.m. In at Porta Marina. The Forum first, with Vesuvius at the far end.
2. 9:45 a.m. The House of the Tragic Poet and the House of the Faun, then out through Porta Ercolano and down the Street of the Tombs to the Villa of the Mysteries. Allow 90 minutes for the detour; it is quietest now.
3. 11:30 a.m. Back through town: the Lupanar, the Stabian Baths, the theaters.
4. 12:30 p.m. East along Via dell'Abbondanza to the amphitheatre and the Great Palaestra. Leave by the Piazza Anfiteatro gate at about 1:30 p.m.

Bring water and a hat. There is little shade, and the basalt paving is hard on thin soles. Until October 14 the park splits entries into 15,000 before 1 p.m. and 5,000 after; from October 15 it closes at 5 p.m., last entry 3:30 p.m., which does not affect a 9 a.m. start.

From the amphitheatre gate, walk into the modern town to the Pompei branch of Da Michele on Via Lepanto, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Its July 2026 menu lists the margherita at €7, the marinara at €6.50 and a 75 cl water at €2.50: 50 cents more than the original in Naples.

Take the Poggiomarino-line train from Pompei Santuario, by the sanctuary. On the timetable in force since June 2025, the 3:09 p.m. reaches Garibaldi at 3:57 p.m.; trains run about every 36 minutes. At Garibaldi, change to metro Line 1 for Museo (€1.30).

4:30 p.m. The MANN, €20. Open to 7:30 p.m., last entry 6:30 p.m.; the entrance is temporarily at the western gate. Go straight to the Pompeii wall paintings and the Farnese sculptures. The mosaic collection and the Secret Cabinet are closed until November 30, 2026, so the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun you walked through this morning is not on show.

7:45 p.m. Starita a Materdei. One stop up Line 1. Order the montanara, fried then baked, at €8.50, and a margherita at €7; the cover is €1.50 a head (menu dated November 2024, the one the pizzeria still links). Starita is closed on Mondays: then go to Sorbillo on Via dei Tribunali, closed Sundays instead.

If you would rather not leave Naples, spend day two on the city's layers. It suits a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the only days the Galleria Borbonica opens.

• 9 a.m. The MANN, €20, until noon.
• 12:15 p.m. Walk 1 km into the Rione Sanità. Lunch at Concettina ai Tre Santi: share the €18 pizza fritta and a €10 marinara (April 2026 prices).
• 2 p.m. The Catacombs of San Gennaro, €13, guided hourly from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Wednesdays. The ticket also covers San Gaudioso within 12 months.
• 5 p.m. Galleria Borbonica's Standard tour, €15, from Vico del Grottone 4, 325 m from Plebiscito. Book it: reservations are required.

Tickets for two come to €96, plus €28 for lunch. On a Friday this is a strong day; on a Wednesday the catacombs are shut, and from Monday to Thursday the Borbonica is.

Pompeii itself closes only on December 25 and January 1. The weak links are the city museums, so plan around them.

Flying in November 2026? Capodichino airport is closed for runway works from November 1 to 30, and some airlines have moved their flights to Salerno airport (QSR), about an hour's drive from Naples: see getting to Naples.

We use the single-company fares because the new integrated Unico prices from October 1, 2026 had not been published when we checked. EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay €2 at Pompeii and the MANN, and under-18s go free, which cuts the bill sharply. Add the city tourist tax, €5.50 to €6 per person per night in most hotels.

Pompeii: Entry Ticket and Guided Tour with an Archaeologist

The ticket is Pompei Express (€20 at the park), so no Villa of the Mysteries. You make your own way to Pompeii. Headsets only for groups of 10 or more; the guide waits 10 minutes for latecomers.
