Pizzeria Di Matteo

10 a.m. to 11 p.m., shut Sunday Via dei Tribunali 94 Street window over dining room

Pizzeria Di Matteo has been on Via dei Tribunali, at number 94, since 1936. It is two businesses in one: a friggitoria window on the street, piled with fried pizza, frittatine and crocchè, and a dining room behind it. Dissapore lists it as open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and closed on Sunday.

Its reputation is older than its recent reviews. When Dissapore went back in June 2024, it found the fried starters had sat too long in the window, the pizzas thin and anonymous, and the prices "not exactly those of a popular Neapolitan pizzeria", with salsiccia and friarielli at €10. Six people paid €97.

The window or a table?

The window is why Di Matteo is famous: a fried pizza or a frittatina in paper, eaten on the street between sights. Dissapore's 2022 ranking of the city's fried pizzas put Di Matteo tenth, with the completa (ricotta, cicoli and pepper) at €6, and called the display window straripante, overflowing.

The same window is the problem. The 2024 reviewer's fried starters were, in her words, too old to be served, and the staff explained that sitting in the window does that. At the table you get a list of twelve margheritas from €5 to €9 and about thirty other pizzas. She found the fried pizzas the best thing she ate.

The practical advice: if you buy from the window, ask for something just out of the oil, or watch what comes out and point.

What the 2024 bill looked like

Dissapore's reviewer took a table of six on a June evening in 2024. The order was two trays of mixed fried starters and a round of pizzas, with a tuna pizza that arrived swimming in oil and mozzarella water. The bill came to €101. When she complained at the cash desk about the fried food, the cashier took it off, for a discount of €4, leaving €97 for six. Her conclusion was a question: what happened to the old pizzerias of Via dei Tribunali?

One visit is one visit. But it matches the shape of the problem: a place that sells a lot of fried food to passers-by, some of it waiting in a window, and a dining room that is no longer cheap.

Better choices on the same street

  • Sorbillo, Via dei Tribunali 32: a €5.50 marinara and a €7 margherita, with a queue.
  • Zia Esterina Sorbillo, Via dei Tribunali 35: the same family's fried-pizza counter.
  • La Masardona: the benchmark fried pizza, €6 at the original near the station, if you are heading for a train.

Practical notes

Via dei Tribunali is the spine of the Centro Storico, and Di Matteo is on our decumani walk. Inside, you pay downstairs at the cash desk on the way out. The 2024 review describes the dining room as plain and unchanged in a decade, which some will like.

We could not open the pizzeria's own website, which blocks automated visitors, so every price on this page comes from a dated review. Check the board before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pizzeria Di Matteo worth it?

For a fried snack from the window, maybe. For a sit-down pizza, a detailed 2024 review says no, and we would go to Sorbillo or Attilio instead.

Is Di Matteo open on Sunday?

No, except in December, according to Dissapore. Monday to Saturday it runs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

How much is a pizza fritta at Di Matteo?

€6 for the completa in Dissapore's 2022 ranking. We found no newer published price.

What should I order at Di Matteo?

A pizza fritta from the street window, ideally one you have watched come out of the fryer. Reviewers rated the fried pizzas above the baked ones.

Where is Di Matteo?

Via dei Tribunali 94 in the old town, on the same street as Sorbillo.
