Where we would eat in Naples
This list agrees with every restaurant verdict on this site, because it is built from them. Each place has its own page with the prices we could read on September 30, 2026, its closing day and a verdict. Seven are worth booking, several under conditions we spell out. One, on the Posillipo waterfront, is not.
Three things to know first. Several of the best trattorie publish no prices online, so where we give a figure it is either from the menu or clearly dated from a review. Sunday and Monday are the hard days: many kitchens close one of them. And the pizzerias are covered separately in our pizza guide; this page is for the dishes you should order when you are not eating pizza, starting with genovese and ragù.
At a glance
- Best trattoria meal

In this guide
Trattorie: under €35 a head
| Restaurant | Prices we saw | Closed | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Locanda Gesù Vecchio | Not published; Michelin's lowest price band, Bib Gourmand 2026 | Monday | Worth it; book a day ahead. Seatings at 7 and 9:30 p.m. |
| Osteria della Mattonella | About €20–€35 a head (2026 guide) | Sources disagree: phone | Worth it for lunch or dinner near Plebiscito |
| Tandem Ragù | Ziti with ragù €9.50 on the January 2026 menu, €12 on July's; cover €2.50 | Not published | Conditional: a reliable plate mid-sightseeing, not a proper meal |
| Trattoria da Nennella | Fixed menu €15 (2024) | Sunday (2024) | Conditional: for the show and the price |
| Mimì alla Ferrovia | Not published | Not published | Conditional: before or after a train |
La Locanda Gesù Vecchio, Via Giovanni Paladino 26, has the best-documented plate of pasta e patate con provola in the old town, plus ziti alla genovese and mozzarella in carrozza. Booking is essential, even at lunch. Osteria della Mattonella, Via Giovanni Nicotera 13, is a tiled room where you ring the bell to get in; its penne lisce alla genovese is the order. A 2020 review listed Wednesday as its closing day and a 2026 guide says Sunday, so call +39 081 416541.
Tandem is a chain with a fixed menu, but it serves ragù any day of the week from several branches (the first is Via Paladino 51, a few doors from the Locanda), with a vegan ragù too. Nennella moved to Piazza Carità 22 in December 2023; the waiters sing, plates are cheap and nothing is booked. We found no 2026 confirmation from the trattoria itself, so check before you queue. Mimì alla Ferrovia, open since 1943 near Piazza Garibaldi, publishes no prices: ask to see the menu before you sit.
Fine dining: one yes, one maybe, one skip
| Restaurant | Menus | Open | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veritas (1 star) | Saturday lunch €55; Memorie €80; Indipendente nine courses €170 | Monday to Saturday dinner; Saturday lunch | Worth it: the best-value starred meal |
| George (2 stars) | Seven courses €240, nine €270; à la carte from €190 | Tuesday to Saturday dinner | Conditional: a once-a-trip celebration |
| Palazzo Petrucci (no star) | €100 to €150 tasting menus | Michelin lists dinner Monday to Thursday, lunch Friday to Sunday | Skip |
Veritas, Corso Vittorio Emanuele 141, is where we would spend the money: one Michelin star, chef Marco Caputi, and a €55 Saturday lunch or the €80 Memorie menu, which includes the spaghetto with clams and smoked butter. Saturday lunch and Memorie can be booked only through its online platform.
George, on the top floor of the Grand Hotel Parker's, is the only two-star restaurant in the city of Naples and has the best view of any dining room here. At €240 to €270 before drinks, book it for the view and an occasion; for the cooking alone Veritas, a few doors along the same road, costs about a third. Smart casual; children from age 5.
Palazzo Petrucci lost its star in the 2025 guide, though its website still mentions one. At €100 to €150, Veritas is cheaper and starred, and George is dearer with a better view. Its separate old-town pizzeria, No. 3 in Italy on the 2026 pizza list, is the better reason to know the name.
Also starred in 2026 but not reviewed here: Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse on the ninth floor of the Romeo hotel (one star, tasting menus €270 and €305 per Reporter Gourmet; closed Sunday and Monday) and ARIA.
By occasion
- Your first dinner: La Locanda Gesù Vecchio, booked the day before, for pasta e patate.
- Lunch between sights near Plebiscito: Osteria della Mattonella, after a phone call.
- A quick plate on the Spaccanapoli walk: Tandem, ziti with ragù or genovese.
- Before or after a Pompeii train: Mimì alla Ferrovia, 1 to 3 people walk in and join the list.
- A loud, cheap night out: Nennella, if you do not mind queuing in the street.
- One fine meal: Veritas. For an anniversary with a view: George.
- Clams: spaghetti alle vongole only where the menu lists fresh vongole veraci and a price. Mimì and Veritas both list clam pastas.
- Vegetarians: Tandem's vegan ragù and vegetarian genovese; La Locanda has vegetarian options per Gambero Rosso.
Before dinner: a drink in Chiaia
Enoteca Belledonne, Vico Belledonne a Chiaia 18, is the easiest good aperitivo in the city: a wine shop since 1997 with bruschette at €7 and a salumi and cheese board at €18. It opens at 4:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. on Sunday). For a cocktail, L'Antiquario, No. 28 on Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026, is worth a booked evening; it does not publish prices, so ask as you order. Both are in Chiaia, down the hill from Veritas.
Closing days at a glance
| Day | Closed |
|---|---|
| Sunday | Veritas, George, Nennella (2024 report), Mattonella (per a 2026 guide) |
| Monday | La Locanda Gesù Vecchio, George, Ducasse |
| Any day | Tandem serves ragù seven days a week across its branches; hours vary by branch and are not published |
| Not published | Mimì alla Ferrovia; Mattonella (sources conflict) |
None of these restaurants publishes its August closure; George's 2026 summer break ran August 9 to September 3. For a Sunday dinner in the old town, book La Locanda Gesù Vecchio. On a Monday night, Veritas is open.
How this list was made
Every restaurant here has a full page on this site written from its own menu, the MICHELIN Guide Italia 2026, Gambero Rosso and dated reviews from Dissapore, Scatti di Gusto and Time Out. Where a trattoria publishes nothing we say so rather than guess. We invented no ratings, and the verdicts say skip where skip is the answer. For eating well for under €10, see cheap eats in Naples.
