Pompeii and Vesuvius day tour

Prices are "from" prices and move daily. Read the option you pick: on HP Travel the Vesuvius ticket and lunch come only with the full-day choice, and a Pompeii-only half day is sold on the same page.

1. Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri: 29 minutes, about every 36 minutes, €3.30 with an EAV ticket. The station is about 200 m from the Porta Marina entrance.
2. Vesuvius first. EAV bus 808 leaves Pompei's Piazza Anfiteatro at 8:30, 9:50, 10:30 a.m. and later, reaching Quota 1000 in 55 minutes. Buses back leave at 11 a.m., noon, 12:30 p.m. and later, stopping on Via Plinio after about 40 minutes and ending at Piazza Anfiteatro after about 55; they do not call at Villa dei Misteri. EAV does not publish the fare on the timetable.
3. Book the crater ticket online in advance: €11.68, sold only on the park's Vivaticket site in 10-minute slots. The shortest route is up to 2 hours round trip. In October the crater opens 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; November to February, to 3 p.m.
4. Pompeii in the afternoon: Pompeii Express ticket €20 (EU 18–24 €2). From October 15, last entry is 3:30 p.m., so be back down by early afternoon.

Total: €6.60 train + €11.68 + €20 = €38.28, plus the bus (about €4.80 return if the usual €2.40 band fare applies): about €43. Our two-day itinerary splits it more comfortably and adds Herculaneum.

• The Campania Express tourist train (€15 one way) is suspended from October 1, 2026 until further notice. Ignore tours or blogs that route you on it.
• Vesuvius closes in bad weather. The park shuts the crater on days of an orange weather alert and refunds tickets automatically. Tours substitute or refund; check the policy.
• Named Pompeii tickets with a daily cap: no exit and re-entry.
• What you see on the crater: a gravel path along the rim, the crater and, on clear days, the bay. See Is Vesuvius worth it?

• Book it if you have a single free day, are traveling with older relatives, or would rather avoid the Circumvesuviana, which can be crowded (see our safety page for sensible precautions).
• Skip it if Pompeii is the priority: give it four hours by train instead, and do Vesuvius another day from Ercolano with Herculaneum.
