Naples in 5 days
Covers hotels, areas, the islands, day trips and planning: rates for named dates, ferry and train fares, and the city tourist tax.

Five days lets you see Naples properly and still spend two days on the water. This plan uses one base in the city and public transport for everything: the old town on foot, Vesuvius and Pompeii by train and bus, Capri and Procida by the regular ferries, and the MANN and the Sanità by metro.
It costs about €801 for two before your hotel. The order matters less than two rules: put the island days and the volcano on the calmest, clearest days of your forecast, and keep the museum day off Tuesday and Wednesday. If a boat is canceled, swap the island day with day 4.

Day 1: the old town, pizza and the sea
Follow Naples in 1 day: Gesù Nuovo, the Santa Chiara cloister (€7), Cappella Sansevero at a booked slot (€12), San Gregorio Armeno, Pio Monte della Misericordia (€10) and the Duomo; pizza at Da Michele (€6.50); Napoli Sotterranea (€18) at 3 p.m.; Via Toledo and the seafront at sunset; dinner at Osteria della Mattonella. About €191 for two. Any day but Tuesday.
Arriving late on day 1? Keep the morning plan for day 1 and move Napoli Sotterranea, which runs tours until 6 p.m., to the evening of day 4.
Day 2: Vesuvius at 9:30 a.m., Pompeii all afternoon
As in Naples in 3 days: the 7:27 a.m. Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi (€3.30), bus 808 at 8:35 a.m. to the crater car park (9:25 a.m.), the crater path on a booked €11.68 slot, the 11 a.m. bus down to Piazza Anfiteatro, lunch at Da Michele's Pompei branch, then Pompeii from 1 p.m. on a €25 Pompeii+ ticket until closing (5 p.m. from October 15). Dinner at Sorbillo, closed Sundays. About €124.66 for two.
If you prefer Herculaneum, take the 8:16 a.m. Poggiomarino-line train to Ercolano Scavi (the Sorrento trains mostly skip it), visit from 8:30 a.m. (€16), and go up Vesuvius from Ercolano station by Vesuvio Express (€20 return with the crater ticket, on its undated price list).
Day 3: Capri
The full timetable, with the Anacapri alternative and the winter changes, is in our Capri day plan. In short:
- 7:55 a.m. Caremar ferry from Calata Porta di Massa (€14.80 plus the €5 landing contribution), arriving about 9:17 a.m.
- 9:30 a.m. Boat from Marina Grande to the Blue Grotto (from €25 return), then €6 entry and €12 rowboat, if the sea allows. From October 16 it closes at 2 p.m.
- 11:15 a.m. Funicular to the Piazzetta (€2.40), 45 minutes on foot to Villa Jovis (€6).
- 2 p.m. Lunch near the Piazzetta, about €25 a head on capri.com's figure.
- 3:30 p.m. Gardens of Augustus (about €2.50), then down to the port.
- 6:45 p.m. NLG's last jet to Beverello (€25), until November 3.
About €252 for two, dinner not included. If the grotto is closed, spend the afternoon in Anacapri instead.
Day 4: the MANN, the Sanità and the catacombs
Metro Line 1 to Museo (€1.30) for the MANN at 9 a.m. (€20; mosaics and Secret Cabinet closed until November 30, 2026). Walk about 1 km into the Sanità for lunch at Concettina ai Tre Santi (pizza fritta €18 to share, marinara €10), then 1.08 km uphill to the Catacombs of San Gennaro for a guided tour (€13, hourly, closed Wednesdays). Come back down on the Rione Sanità walk, 2.6 km to Museo, and eat ragù at Tandem in the evening (€12 a plate on the July 2026 menu). About €131.20 for two. Not on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Day 5: Procida, and home for dinner
Procida is the easy island: short crossings, everything on foot or by €1.20 bus, a €3.50 landing charge, far fewer people than Capri.
- 8:55 a.m. Caremar hydrofoil from Molo Beverello, €17.40, 35 to 40 minutes. Other morning departures on the October 8 timetable: 7:30 and 11:45 a.m.
- 9:40 a.m. From Marina Grande, walk up through the lanes to Terra Murata, the walled citadel on the island's highest point, and look down on Marina Corricella.
- 11:30 a.m. Down the steps into Corricella, the harbor of stacked colored houses. Lunch on the quay. We found no Procida restaurant that publishes its prices, so lunch is not in our total.
- 2 p.m. Buy the €3.60 day bus ticket and ride south to the bridge for Vivara, or west to the long beach of Ciraccio.
- 4:50 p.m. The last hydrofoil to Naples on the October 8 timetable. Miss it and there is a ferry at 5:55 p.m. and a last one at 8:15 p.m. to Porta di Massa (€12.70, about an hour).
- 7:45 p.m. A farewell montanara at Starita (€8.50; closed Mondays, when Sorbillo is open).

Starting Monday to Wednesday also works if the MANN-and-Sanità day lands on Thursday or later. Leave a spare island day before your flight, never the last day, and watch the strike calendar: a national strike on October 2, 2026 hits rail from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., an EAV rail strike runs 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. on October 16, and a general strike runs from 9 p.m. December 3 to 9 p.m. December 4.
Flying in November 2026? Capodichino airport is closed for runway works from November 1 to 30, and some airlines have moved their flights to Salerno airport (QSR), about an hour's drive from Naples: see getting to Naples.

Each day's lines are itemized on its own plan page. Not included: lunch on Procida, dinner after Capri, drinks, and your hotel. Naples' tourist tax adds €5.50 to €6 per person per night in most hotels. Transport uses the ANM and EAV single-company fares, unchanged on October 1, 2026; the new integrated Unico prices had not been published.

Naples: Capri & Anacapri, Travel like a VIP by Hydrofoil
No Blue Grotto and no Monte Solaro chairlift. Meets at Bar Picnic, Molo Beverello. Needs 2 people from April to October, 4 in winter. For comparison, the NLG hydrofoil alone is €25 each way.

Frequently asked questions
Is five days in Naples too long?
No, if two of them are on the islands. Five days in the city alone would be generous; five with Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri and Procida is full.
Should I stay in Sorrento for part of a five-day trip?
Only if the Amalfi Coast is in your plan. For this route, Naples is the better base: the ferries to both islands and every train in this plan leave from the city.
Capri or Procida, if I have to drop one island?
Keep Capri for the Blue Grotto and Villa Jovis, keep Procida if you want a quiet day that costs half as much. Our island guide compares them with Ischia.
What if a ferry is canceled?
Swap that island day with day 4, which needs no boat. Rough seas are more common from November, when there are also fewer crossings.
