Vesuvius grows wine. Its volcanic slopes above Pompeii and Ercolano produce Lacryma Christi, a DOC wine in red and white, and several family wineries open their terraces for tastings with lunch. The best-documented is Cantina del Vesuvio in Trecase, run by the Russo family, which says it has worked these hills since 1930 and farms organically.
Booked direct, its tasting of five wines with a three-course lunch costs €50 (classic) or €60 (superior), with a free shuttle from Pompeii or Torre Annunziata if you ask three days ahead. On GetYourGuide on September 30, 2026, a WORLDTOURS tour to the same winery, with transport from central Naples, cost €54 for three hours. That is €4 more for the ride.

What you eat and drink
Cantina del Vesuvio's lunch is local produce: salami and cheeses including provolone and salted ricotta, casatiello (stuffed bread), roasted eggplant, bruschetta with Piennolo tomatoes; then spaghetti from Torre Annunziata with Piennolo cherry tomatoes and basil; then a pastiera. The wines are its own Vesuvio Lacryma Christi DOC, from organic Piedirosso and Caprettone vines. Tastings take place on a terrace looking over the vineyards to the sea and Capri, or by the fireplace on cold days.
Bottles are sold only at the winery and online. For comparison, Casa Setaro, another Trecase producer, lists its Lacryma Christi at €18–€30 a bottle in its online shop.
Getting there without a tour
- Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi to Torre Annunziata-Oplonti (23 minutes) or Pompei Scavi (29 minutes); €3.30 each way.
- Email the winery at least three days before to book the free shuttle; the winery says availability is limited and not guaranteed with shorter notice.
- Book the tasting itself on the winery's website; reservations are required, the last start is 4 p.m.
The winery is at Via Panoramica 15, Trecase. Without the shuttle, you need a taxi or car.
Other wineries on the slopes
- Sorrentino Vini, Boscotrecase: offers cellar tours and tastings with a sommelier, a vineyard walk and an agriturismo, the Vesuvio Inn, on the estate. Its site publishes no prices; ask when booking.
- Casa Setaro, Trecase: sells its Lacryma Christi and Caprettone wines online at €15–€30 a bottle.
We have not compared these tastings side by side, so we name them without a verdict. Cantina del Vesuvio is the one with a published price, a free shuttle and a clear menu.
Pairing it with Pompeii or the crater
- Pompeii in the morning, wine at lunch: the shuttle leaves from Porta Marina, the main entrance to Pompeii. Easiest pairing.
- Oplontis: the Villa of Poppaea at Oplontis is by Torre Annunziata station, the other shuttle point (closed Tuesdays).
- The crater: climb Vesuvius in the morning (book a 9 a.m. slot) and taste in the afternoon, but not the other way round: the crater walk is uphill on loose gravel.
- Sunset: GetYourGuide lists sunset tasting-and-dinner versions from €90.
