Where to stay in Naples

For a first trip to Naples, stay in the Centro Storico, the historic center. The churches, the Veiled Christ, the Caravaggio, the underground sites and the famous pizzerias are all within about 15 minutes' walk, and Metro Line 1 and the Circumvesuviana are close. If you want a sea view, easy walking and days on the islands more than the old town's lanes, the Via Toledo and Municipio area and the seafront are the alternatives. Everything else is a choice for a particular kind of trip.
This page agrees with the verdicts on each of our area and hotel pages. Hotel prices are the cheapest double shown on Kayak for one night and two adults, taxes included, for two sample Wednesdays: October 14 and November 11, 2026, checked on September 30. Mid-October was expensive everywhere; November was often half the price. Add the city tax on top, paid at the hotel.

Centro Storico: the best base for a first visit
The Centro Storico is the UNESCO-listed old town around Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. You walk out of the door into the reason you came. The trade-offs: narrow lanes, some street noise, no sea view, and a limited traffic zone (ZTL) that makes arriving by car awkward. From Napoli Centrale it is 28 minutes on foot to Gesù Nuovo, or a fixed €11 taxi.
Two hotels we recommend here: the Decumani Hotel de Charme, in an 18th-century palazzo 6 minutes from Gesù Nuovo, €190 with breakfast on November 11 (book Comfort or Superior, not the small Economy rooms); and Costantinopoli 104 near Piazza Bellini, calm, with a pool and €35-a-day parking, €197 with breakfast in November. Hotel Piazza Bellini is good at €140 but not at the €455 it charged on October 14.
Via Toledo, Municipio and the seafront
Via Toledo and Municipio is the practical choice for a trip with island days. Molo Beverello is 7 minutes' walk from Piazza Municipio, the metro is underneath, Plebiscito is 9 minutes away and Gesù Nuovo 13. The best value we found was Hotel Il Convento, a 14-room 3-star just above Via Toledo, €145 to €220 with breakfast; light sleepers should ask for a quiet room. The NH Napoli Panorama on Via Medina has rooms from the 16th floor up, €183 to €225 room only, the cheapest real view in the center.
On the Lungomare and Santa Lucia, the grand hotels of Via Partenope face Castel dell'Ovo. The Eurostars Hotel Excelsior is the best value of them on its direct web rate, €307 to €345 room only. The Grand Hotel Vesuvio is worth it only with a room sold as sea view, about €140 more than its entry rate. Plebiscito is about 10 minutes' walk, but the old town is 30, so budget for taxis: €17.50 fixed fare from the station.
Chiaia and Vomero: for a second trip
Chiaia, west of Plebiscito, is where Neapolitans shop and meet for an aperitivo. It suits a longer stay or a second trip: calm streets by day, lively bars at night, the seafront a few minutes away. Piazza dei Martiri is 11 minutes from Plebiscito but 27 from Gesù Nuovo. Hotel Palazzo Alabardieri (€324 to €390) is good if Chiaia's evenings are the point; for sightseeing, the Excelsior is closer to Plebiscito for about the same money.
Vomero is the residential hill above the center: quieter and greener, with Castel Sant'Elmo on the doorstep. Every trip down means a funicular or Line 1, which costs time on a short first visit. Choose it for a week or more, or if you sleep badly in noisy streets. Hotel Cimarosa there was €137–€138 on both our dates.
On a budget: Quartieri Spagnoli and the station
The Quartieri Spagnoli, the grid of lanes above Via Toledo, has the most central cheap rooms in Naples, from about €68 on November 11 (Toledo Hotel) and many B&Bs. What you get with the price is scooters in the lanes day and night, street life late and steps; it is not for light sleepers or anyone with limited mobility.
Piazza Garibaldi makes sense for one or two nights around early trains, a late arrival or a Pompeii day. The Starhotels Terminus across from the station was €141 on November 11 and €247 on October 14, room only. For a whole city stay, sleep nearer the old town: you will spend time and money going back and forth, and main stations are where the UK government's advice asks visitors to take most care.
Sorrento instead of Naples?
Sorrento is a good base for Capri (22 to 32 minutes by Caremar), the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, and a pleasant place to spend an evening. It is a poor base for the city of Naples: 69 minutes each way on the Circumvesuviana, with the last train back from Naples leaving Garibaldi at 10:14 p.m., which rules out a late dinner in town. The Campania Express tourist train is suspended from October 1, 2026, so the ordinary train is the only rail option.
The sensible split on a week-long trip is three or four nights in Naples, then two or three in Sorrento or on the coast. We run the numbers in Naples or Sorrento as a base?
The city tax and booking tips
Naples raised its tourist tax on May 1, 2026. Per person per night, for guests over 14, up to 14 nights: €6 at 4-star and 5-star hotels and short-let apartments, €5.50 at 3-star hotels and B&Bs, €4.50 at 2-star and €4 at 1-star hotels. A couple spending four nights in a 4-star hotel pays €48 on top of the room.
- Book early for October and for spring weekends; one hotel charged more than three times as much on October 14 as on November 11.
- For 2027, expect high prices from late May to mid-July, when the America's Cup is on the bay.
- If you drive, check parking before you book: few central hotels have garages, and those that publish prices charge €30–€50 a day.
