Getting to Naples

Gesac, the company that runs the airport, has scheduled runway works from November 1 to November 30, 2026, and no flights will use Capodichino in that period, according to NapoliToday's September 14 report citing the airport. Nine airlines had announced moves to Salerno by September 23: ITA Airways (Milan Linate), easyJet (Milan Malpensa), Vueling (Barcelona), Transavia (Amsterdam and Paris Orly), Eurowings (Düsseldorf and Stuttgart), Iberia (Madrid), Neos (Sharm el-Sheikh), Luxair (Luxembourg) and flydubai (Dubai). Plans for several big carriers, including Ryanair, British Airways and Lufthansa, had not been confirmed.

What to do about it:

• Look at the airport code on your booking and on every email from the airline. A flight sold as Naples may now leave from Salerno.
• Salerno airport is about 73 km (45 miles) from Piazza Garibaldi by road, roughly an hour's drive without traffic. The region has promised extra links to Napoli Centrale, but no timetable or fare had been published by September 30.
• For a November trip, flying into Rome and taking the train often beats a Salerno transfer. It also puts you on the fastest link in this guide.
• If you are staying on the Amalfi Coast rather than in Naples, Salerno is closer to you than Capodichino ever was. See the Amalfi Coast.

ANM, the city transport company, runs the Alibus between the terminal, Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) and the port. It is the cheapest way in and usually the quickest to the station. The facts, from ANM's own page:

• Price: €5 for one ride. Buy it from the driver, from the machines at the arrivals exit, in the UnicoCampania app, or tap a contactless card on the reader. An integrated Alibus ticket, also €5, is valid 90 minutes on Alibus plus other city transport.
• Stops from the airport: Piazza Garibaldi (Stazione Centrale), Immacolatella / Porta di Massa inside the port, then Molo Beverello at the Stazione Marittima.
• Times: airport to Stazione Centrale 15 minutes, airport to the port 35 minutes.
• Hours: first bus from the airport 5:30 a.m., last at midnight; from the station toward the airport 5:10 a.m. to 11:50 p.m.; from the port 5:30 a.m. to 11:35 p.m. Buses run at most every 15 minutes.

Two catches. Ordinary transport passes and the Campania Artecard are not valid on Alibus, so card holders still pay €5. And validate the paper ticket as soon as you board. If your hotel is in the old town, ride to Piazza Garibaldi and change to Metro Line 1; for Chiaia, the seafront or the ferries, stay on to Molo Beverello. Naples sets tariffe predeterminate, fixed fares per car for common routes. They include luggage, night and holiday supplements and the airport surcharge. You must ask for the fixed fare when you get in. The driver cannot refuse, must give you a receipt showing the route and price before you leave, and the meter then shows F0.00. These are the city's rates in force since September 1, 2024:

Fixed fares leaving the city: Pompei Scavi €70, Sorrento €125, Positano €145, Amalfi €155, Ravello €160, motorway tolls extra. A minivan for more than four people adds €5. On the meter instead, a weekday daytime ride starts at €4 plus a €5 airport supplement, so the fixed fare is almost always the better deal from Capodichino. Take only white official taxis from the rank.

The high-speed line makes Naples an easy add-on to Rome. Trenitalia's planner, queried on September 30 for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, showed Frecciarossa trains from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale about twice an hour in the morning:

• Frecciarossa: 1 hour 13 minutes to 1 hour 23 minutes, €18.90–€28.90 booked two weeks ahead. The same trains cost €52 each when we searched for the next morning.
• Intercity: about 2 hours 3 minutes, €19.90 two weeks ahead, €27 the day before.
• Regional trains: about 3 hours with a change, €14.05, the same price whenever you buy.

Italo, the private competitor, says it runs 32 trains a day each way between Rome and Naples, with fares from €14.90 when booked early. Both companies price dynamically, so the rule is simple: book as soon as your dates are fixed, and expect to pay two or three times more on the day.

From Fiumicino airport, Trenitalia sells a through ticket: Leonardo Express to Termini, then a Frecciarossa, about 2 hours 15 minutes for €32.90–€36.90 on our sample date. Everything arrives at Piazza Garibaldi: trains, the Alibus and many long-distance coaches. It is a big, busy transport square, not a place to linger with luggage. From here:

• Metro Line 1 (Garibaldi station) reaches Università, Municipio, Toledo and Dante in a few stops, for €1.30.
• On foot it is about 28 minutes (2.1 km) to Gesù Nuovo and 36 minutes (2.7 km) to Molo Beverello.
• A taxi from the rank to the old town is a fixed €11; to Via Partenope €17.50; to Molo Beverello €15.50.

Do not bring a car into Naples unless you must. The old town and several Chiaia streets are camera-controlled limited traffic zones (ZTL), parking is scarce, and the hotel garages that publish prices charge €30–€50 a day. If you want a car for the Amalfi Coast or Paestum, pick it up on the day you leave the city.
