Rione Sanita

Guesthouse from €119 on our date MANN in 14 minutes Metro: Materdei, Museo

The Rione Sanita lies in the valley just north of the old town, at the foot of the Capodimonte hill. In Greek and Roman times it was outside the walls and used as a burial ground, which is why it holds the city's great early Christian catacombs. It was built up from the late 16th century, and noble families put up palaces here, among them Palazzo Sanfelice and Palazzo dello Spagnolo. Toto, the great Neapolitan comic actor, was born here.

Over the 20th century the district became, in Wikipedia's words, one of the most infamous and degraded in Naples, marked by unemployment, poverty and organized crime. That reputation is why many guides still skip it. It is only part of the story now. A local cooperative, La Paranza, runs the catacombs, several churches and a guesthouse, and the district draws visitors for its sights, its pizza and its pastry.

What is here

La Paranza's official site lists the places it manages in and around the Sanita: the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso, the Basilica of San Gennaro extra Moenia, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanita, San Severo, Sant'Aspreno ai Crociferi with the Jago Museum, and the Fontanelle Cemetery ossuary. Visits to the catacombs are guided and booking is mandatory; check our catacombs page for current times and prices.

For food, the district is known for pizza and pastry. Concettina ai Tre Santi is one of the city's most celebrated pizzerias, and Pasticceria Poppella draws queues for the fiocco di neve, a cream-filled brioche. Our Rione Sanita walk links the catacombs, the palazzi and the pastry shop.

Perception and reality

Both halves of the Sanita's story are true. It remains a working-class neighborhood with real social problems, and it has also become known for community-led change, with its catacombs, churches and ossuary run for visitors by La Paranza, a social cooperative based in the district. What that means for a visitor:

  • By day the main street, Via della Sanita, is busy with residents, shoppers and visitors heading to the catacombs and the basilica. Walking there is ordinary city walking.
  • The realistic risks are the ones the UK government lists for Italian cities: pickpocketing and bag-snatching, including from scooters. Keep your phone in hand on the wall side and your bag closed.
  • At night the side streets are quiet and dark. Eat, then go home by the main streets or by taxi rather than wandering.

We will not tell you it is dangerous, and we will not tell you it is just like Chiaia. It is a real neighborhood. See Is Naples safe? for the citywide facts.

Where to sleep

The Sanita has few hotels. The most interesting bed is Casa del Monacone, at Via Sanita 124, in the former convent attached to the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanita. La Paranza runs it as a hospitality project; it has six rooms with private bathrooms plus one apartment for up to six, furnished by the Neapolitan designer Riccardo Dalisi, with a large terrace. Kayak lists it as a two-star. On September 30, 2026 it showed a double for €119 on October 14 and no availability on November 11. Book early.

The city tax since May 1, 2026 is €5.50 per person per night at B&Bs and similar guesthouses, and €4.50 at two-star hotels. Ask which category applies when you book.

Getting around and walking times

The metro skirts the district: Line 1 at Materdei and Museo, and Line 2 at Piazza Cavour. By OpenStreetMap foot routing, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanita is 14 minutes (1 km) from the MANN, 24 minutes (1.8 km) from Piazza del Gesu Nuovo and 37 minutes (2.8 km) from Piazza del Plebiscito. The Catacombs of San Gennaro, at Via Capodimonte 13 up the hill, are 24 minutes (1.8 km) from the MANN; a visit there pairs well with Capodimonte above.

Streets are steep in places, with steps and cobbles. Driving here is not worth the trouble.

Who should stay here

Stay here if you have been to Naples before, want to see a neighborhood beyond the tourist grid, like supporting a community project and are comfortable in busy, unpolished streets. Visit but stay elsewhere on a first trip, with young children, or if quiet, well-lit streets at night matter to you: the Centro Storico is about 25 minutes' walk away and puts you among more of the sights.
