Campi Flegrei (Pozzuoli, Baia, Cuma)

What the official sources say, as of September 30, 2026:

• July 31, 2026, 7:46 p.m.: an earthquake of Md 4.7 (Mw 4.4), 3 km deep, followed by a swarm of 217 events in the area of Solfatara, Pisciarelli, Monte Olibano and the Gulf of Pozzuoli, which INGV declared over on August 2. The previous record was Md 4.6 on June 30, 2025.
• Damage: an unoccupied building collapsed near the amphitheatre and the pier at Pozzuoli was damaged, according to Civil Protection updates reported that night. By August 4, about 700 people had been displaced in Pozzuoli and nearly 400 homes declared unfit, and the government allocated €100 million.
• Now: INGV's weekly bulletin issued September 29, 2026 counted 18 earthquakes of Md 0.0 or more for September 21 to 27, the largest Md 1.5, and a ground uplift rate of about 10 mm a month since early February 2026. It states that the data do not suggest significant changes in the short term.
• Alert level: the Civil Protection Department keeps the Campi Flegrei at yellow, a state of "attention" with reinforced monitoring, under levels updated by decree on October 30, 2025. The higher phases, pre-alarm and alarm, would be declared by the Prime Minister.

What it means for a visit: the park closes its sites after significant quakes for safety checks, then reopens them one by one. In 2026 that happened on June 24, July 31 and August 10; after the August swarm, Cuma reopened the same day, the Anfiteatro on August 12 and the Baia castle museum on August 15. The park offers refunds for tickets on days sites are shut. Check its news page and INGV's bulletins before you go, and follow staff instructions on site.

Ticket offices close an hour before the sites. Entry is by quota: 50 people every 30 minutes at Baia and Cuma, 25 at the amphitheatre, with a 120-minute maximum stay, 30 minutes in the amphitheatre's underground, and no more than 25 people at a time in the Cave of the Sibyl. The park says the underground visit at the amphitheatre "may not be guaranteed" on some days. Buy online through the Musei Italiani app or website; it is strongly advised, and required for groups over 10.

• Solfatara: the steaming crater in Pozzuoli, once a popular stop, has been closed to visitors since September 2017, when an 11-year-old boy and his parents died after falling into a pit. We found no reopening. INGV still monitors its main fumarole, about 173 °C in September 2026. Old guides and tour pages that list it are out of date.
• Macellum ("Temple of Serapis"): Pozzuoli's Roman market, whose columns show the rise and fall of the ground, is temporarily closed. You can see it from the street.
• Piscina Mirabilis and Cento Camerelle at Bacoli open through a public-private partnership with their own booking.
• Rione Terra, Pozzuoli's old citadel with its Roman streets underneath, runs its own visits; we could not confirm their status after July 31.

Pozzuoli is 19.7 km (12 miles) from central Naples by road. Take Metro Line 2 from Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) to Pozzuoli, the terminus, close to the amphitheatre on Corso Terracciano, or the Cumana railway from Montesanto. A single ticket in the Naples-Pozzuoli fare band costs €2.60. The Cumana, damaged in a tunnel under Monte Olibano by the July 31 quake, has run its full route to Torregaveta again since September 11, 2026, with a new Pozzuoli station on Via Fasano.

Baia and Cuma are further west, in the Bacoli area (€3.30 fare band from Naples). EAV runs local buses in the Flegrean area, but connections are slow; with one day, a taxi or car between Baia and Cuma saves hours. From Pozzuoli's port, ferries cross to Procida and Ischia. 1. Metro Line 2 to Pozzuoli; the Anfiteatro Flavio at 9 a.m. (not Tuesday).
2. Taxi or bus to Cuma for the acropolis and the Cave of the Sibyl, before the ticket office closes (4:40 p.m. until October 15, 4:15 p.m. to October 31, 3 p.m. from November).
3. Afternoon at Baia: the terraced baths, then the castle museum, open to 6:30 p.m.

That uses three of the four sites on the €10 ticket; the fourth fits on the next day or two. Remember the split closing days: Mondays shut Baia, Tuesdays shut the amphitheatre and Cuma, so Wednesday to Sunday is best. For the deep history underfoot in Naples itself, read Naples from below.
