Rione Sanita walk

2.6 km, downhill, about 35 min Catacombs €13, booked, hourly Not Wednesday: catacombs shut

Rione Sanita lies in a valley just outside the old walls, below the hill of Capodimonte. Early Christians buried their dead here, in catacombs cut into the tuff; in the 18th century noble families built palaces here for the healthier air. Then the neighborhood was cut off by a road bridge overhead and, for decades, had a hard reputation. Today it is a busy, working neighborhood, and the catacombs, run by a local cooperative, are the center of its revival.

This walk starts at the top, at the Catacombs of San Gennaro, and runs about 2.6 km (1.6 miles) downhill through the Sanita to Museo metro station, dropping about 50 meters. The only ticket is the catacomb tour, €13. The catch: the catacombs close on Wednesdays.

The route, top to bottom

  1. Catacombs of San Gennaro, Via Capodimonte 13, beside the basilica of the Madre del Buon Consiglio. Guided tours leave on the hour from 10 a.m.; the last starts at 5 p.m.
  2. Down to Piazza Sanita, about 1.1 km, by the Rampe San Gennaro dei Poveri and Via San Vincenzo. The Basilica di Santa Maria della Sanita stands over the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, whose entrance is at Via Sanita 123.

  5. Concettina ai Tre Santi on Via Arena della Sanita, a minute away: see our review.
  6. Palazzo dello Spagnolo, Via Vergini 19, a few minutes on, famous for its open staircase in the courtyard.
  7. Via Mario Pagano to Piazza Cavour and Museo station (metro Line 1), about 500 meters.

The detour: Fontanelle Cemetery

The Fontanelle Cemetery, the vast ossuary cave at Via Fontanelle 80, reopened on April 19, 2026 after years of closure, managed by the same cooperative, La Paranza. Booking is mandatory, it is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it is closed on Wednesdays. It sits at the western end of the valley: from Piazza Sanita it is about 1 km each way along Via Sanita and Via Fontanelle, so it adds about 30 minutes of walking to the day.

When to go, and what to expect

Book a 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. catacomb tour, walk down through the morning and reach Concettina for lunch. Any day but Wednesday.

About the reputation: the Sanita is a dense, working-class neighborhood, with the scooters and street life that come with it. By day on this route you will be among residents, schoolchildren and tour groups heading to the catacombs. Take the same care with phones as anywhere in Naples; our safety page has the plain version.

Who this walk is for

  • Second- or third-day visitors who have done the old town loop.
  • Architecture lovers: the two staircases are the Neapolitan Baroque at its most theatrical.
  • Families: children tend to like the catacombs; the walk down is easy.
  • Pair it with: the Capodimonte museum, up the hill from the catacombs, for a full day.
