The Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto) are a series of flower-filled terraces in Capri town, a short walk from the Piazzetta and right beside the Certosa di San Giacomo. They are run by the municipality, not the state, which is why they are not on the Capri museums' combined ticket. What you come for is the view: straight down the south coast to the Faraglioni, the three rock stacks off the island, and across the bay of Marina Piccola.
Entry costs about €2.50, with children up to 12 free, according to capri.com; we could not load the municipality's own ticket page. The municipal culture office publishes the hours: 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from October 1 to 15 and 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from October 16 to November 3, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Below the terraces zigzags Via Krupp, the famous hairpin path to Marina Piccola, whose status we could not confirm.

The view, and where to stand
The terraces step down the cliff. The lowest viewpoint looks south-east to the Faraglioni and south-west over Marina Piccola, with Via Krupp's switchbacks cut into the rock below you. The upper terraces are planted with flowers and Mediterranean plants.
- Early morning and later afternoon are the quieter times, as capri.com also advises.
- Around sunset the terraces are popular for photos; closing is 6:30 p.m. from October 16.
- In rain or low cloud the view flattens; save your ticket for another hour.
You need 20 to 30 minutes, longer if you sit. The gardens are compact, and at peak times there may be a short queue at the gate.
Via Krupp: what we know and what we could not confirm
Via Krupp was built in the early 20th century for Friedrich Alfred Krupp, so he could walk from his rooms near the Certosa down to Marina Piccola, where his yacht was moored. The engineer Emilio Mayer cut its hairpins so tightly into the rock that from above they seem to overlap. It is more than a kilometer long.
Its recent history is a series of closures:
- It reopened in June 2023 after nine years closed for falling rocks, at a ceremony with the culture minister and the mayor.
- A storm on August 21, 2024 covered the hairpins with mud and debris; the mayor announced a reopening a week after August 29, 2024, once safety checks were done.
- In 2026, capri.com's page on the gardens says the switchback path is "currently closed due to a danger of falling rocks", while also noting it is generally open from May to October depending on rock stability.
We found no official notice for autumn 2026. Our advice: treat Via Krupp as a bonus. Look down from the gardens; if the gate is open and people are walking it, go. Otherwise, reach Marina Piccola by the island bus from Capri town (€2.40) or on foot by the road.

The official site gives last admission as 30 minutes before closing; capri.com says 15. Plan on the earlier one. Groups of more than 10 must buy online through the municipal culture office. There is no booking for individuals and entry is not timed.

- Certosa di San Giacomo, next door: the 14th-century charterhouse, now a museum run by the state, €10 or part of the €12 Capri combined ticket, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October and to 4 p.m. from November.
- Villa Jovis, 45 minutes' walk away on the other side of town, for Tiberius's palace and the Salto di Tiberio.
- Marina Piccola, by bus or, if open, Via Krupp, for a swim with the Faraglioni in view.
- Anacapri, by bus, for Villa San Michele and Monte Solaro.

How long do you need at the Gardens of Augustus?

Take the funicular from Marina Grande to the Piazzetta (€2.40), then walk five to ten minutes along Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Federico Serena toward the Certosa di San Giacomo.
