Posillipo, Marechiaro and the Gaiola

1. Start at the Capo Posillipo bus terminus, at the top of Discesa Gaiola.
2. Out to Parco Virgiliano and back, about 850 meters each way along Viale Virgilio. The clifftop park has belvederes over Nisida, the Campi Flegrei and the islands. Skip it and the walk is 4.3 km.
3. Down Discesa Gaiola to the park gate, about 1.45 km, dropping roughly 115 meters to the sea. Steep and partly stepped.
4. Back up the same way, about 1.45 km. OpenStreetMap shows no public path along the shore to Marechiaro.
5. Discesa Coroglio and Via Marechiaro down to the hamlet of Marechiaro, about 1.4 km, with its small harbor and restaurants at the water's edge.

Distances are from OpenStreetMap foot routing; heights are approximate. From Marechiaro, climb back up Via Marechiaro to the bus stops on Discesa Coroglio.

The park is run by the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola, a non-profit. Access is free every day, but how you get in depends on the month:

On days with a regional weather alert, the park stays closed; check the Campania civil protection bulletin before you set out. In summer the morning and afternoon are separate slots, so book the one you want.

Inside, you can hire an audioguide at the visitor center, Tuesday to Sunday, for €3; it lasts about 20 minutes and comes in Italian and English. The park also runs glass-bottom boat trips, snorkeling tours and kayak routes; see kayaking along Posillipo.

One more warning: in May 2025 a sinkhole opened on the pedestrian part of Discesa Gaiola and the city's civil protection closed the park. It ran events again in 2026, but a reopening date was not posted; if the lane is barred, that is why.

• Pausilypon, the archaeological park of the Roman villa above the Gaiola, entered through the Roman tunnel of the Grotta di Seiano: closed from October 1, 2026 for restoration and safety work, with no reopening date.
• Parco Virgiliano: closed for works in spring 2026, partly reopened from June 27, 2026. The entrance plaza, the north avenue and the belvederes are open; the rest of the work runs into 2027. Hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from September to June and 7 a.m. to midnight in July and August.

Buses climb Posillipo to the Capo Posillipo terminus, a few minutes from the top of Discesa Gaiola. In OpenStreetMap's route data, the stops there are served by ANM lines 140 (from Via Santa Lucia along the seafront), C21 (from Mergellina), C27 (from Piazza Amedeo) and C31 (from Via Scarlatti on the Vomero). Taxis also work, and save the uphill wait for a bus at the end.

• Swimmers and snorkelers from May to September, with a booked slot.
• Walkers who want a quieter, greener Naples and can manage the climb back.
• Anyone on a longer stay: on a two- or three-day trip, the Lungomare walk gives you the sea with none of the logistics.
• Not for: strollers, wheelchairs, a hot midday, or winter afternoons when the gate shuts at 3 p.m.
