Pio Monte della Misericordia
The Pio Monte della Misericordia is a charity founded in 1602 by seven young Neapolitan noblemen, and it still operates. Its chapel on Via dei Tribunali holds Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy, painted in 1606–1607 for this altar, where it still hangs. Entry costs €10, or €8 if you are under 25, part of a group of 15 or more, or carry a Campania Artecard. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children under 16 is €20, and children up to 6 go free.
It is open every day: Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last ticket 5:30 p.m.), and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (last ticket 2 p.m.). It closes on December 25 and Easter Sunday, and at 2:30 p.m. on December 24, December 31 and August 15. One rule catches people out: phones may be used only for the audioguide app, which in practice means no photos. Our Caravaggio in Naples article puts this painting next to the Flagellation at Capodimonte.

What you are looking at in the Seven Works of Mercy
The Pio Monte paid what its own site calls the "exorbitant" sum of 400 ducats. The commission came through Giovan Battista Manso, one of the seven founders. Caravaggio put all seven corporal works of mercy into one crowded street scene, with the Madonna and Child carried by angels at the top. Read it figure by figure:
- Feeding the hungry and visiting prisoners: a young woman, Pero, breastfeeds her imprisoned father, Cimon.
- Burying the dead: a man carries away a corpse.
- Clothing the naked and visiting the sick: Saint Martin cuts his cloak for a nude beggar.
- Sheltering pilgrims: a pilgrim identified as Saint James.
- Giving drink to the thirsty: Samson drinks from the jawbone of a donkey.
The picture is dark and the chapel is small, so give your eyes a minute. The works of mercy were the charity's actual programme, which is why the painting sits over the altar and not in a gallery.
The picture gallery upstairs
Most visitors see the chapel and leave. The ticket also covers the Quadreria, the institution's collection on the upper floor, which runs from the late 15th century to the present day. Look for:
- Luca Giordano's self-portrait, from around 1692.
- Massimo Stanzione's equestrian portrait of Carlo di Tocco.
- Two versions of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas, by Dirk van Baburen and Bernardo Cavallino, useful for seeing how fast Caravaggio's style spread.
- Around forty canvases by Francesco De Mura, left to the Pio Monte, including a portrait of his wife.
- Works by Mattia Preti, Jusepe de Ribera and Andrea Vaccaro.
Upstairs is also the coretto, the small gallery the site mentions alongside the painting, from which you look down toward the altar. There is a lift to the gallery floor, a ramp at the church entrance and an accessible toilet on the first floor.
When to go
There is rarely a real queue here, which is the point of coming. Two timing tips:
- Sunday is short. The last ticket is at 2 p.m., so do it in the morning and keep the afternoon for somewhere open later.
- It pairs with the Duomo. The cathedral is about 100 m away, and the entrance to Napoli Sotterranea is a few minutes along Via dei Tribunali.
It is also a good answer when Cappella Sansevero is sold out: different century, same street grid, and a masterpiece without a timed-ticket scramble. Our Spaccanapoli and decumani walk passes the door.

Buy at the door or online through the Pio Monte's ticketing partner, linked from its site. The audioguide is the izi.travel app on your own phone, so download it on Wi-Fi before you arrive. The institution also offers guided visits; it does not list their price on its info page. The info page was last updated on January 27, 2026.
Why the charity still matters
This is not a museum that happens to own a Caravaggio. The Pio Monte is a working charity, and the palace also holds its archive and a library of more than 17,000 printed volumes. The chapel's other altarpieces are by Neapolitan masters of the same century, and a contemporary section shows recent work. Buying a ticket supports the institution that has kept the painting in place for over four centuries. If you are building a day around art in the Centro Storico, this is the stop to put first.
