Naples guided walking tour

€42 incl. €19 of tickets 2 to 2.5 hours Piazza del Gesù Nuovo

The historic center of Naples is a grid of Greek streets, and a guide helps you read it: which church is on top of which Roman market, where the Neapolitan nativity-makers work, why the Veiled Christ draws a queue. On GetYourGuide on September 30, 2026, the most-reviewed old-town walk, Askos Tours' downtown tour, cost €42 (crossed out €56) for 2.5 hours from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, with entry to the Cappella Sansevero and the Santa Chiara cloister included.

Those two tickets cost €19 on their own (€12 and €7). So the guiding costs about €23. The alternatives are a tip-based "free" tour, or walking our Spaccanapoli and decumani route alone.

All are tip-based; each had over 1,700 reviews with scores of 9.5–9.6 out of 10. For the Quartieri on your own, see our Quartieri Spagnoli walk.

The Sansevero problem

The one thing a guide really saves you is the Cappella Sansevero booking. Every visit needs a timed slot; online sales open 60 days ahead, extra tickets are released two days before, and there are no refunds or changes. It is closed on Tuesdays. If you book the Askos tour for a Tuesday, ask what replaces the chapel. If you are going alone, book Sansevero first and build the walk around it. Our Veiled Christ article explains why it is worth the effort.

Adding the underground

Several walking tours pair the old town with a trip underground. The cheapest listed on GetYourGuide was a 1-hour guided visit under the Quartieri Spagnoli for €18 (4.8 from about 5,900 reviews). For the two big underground sites, Napoli Sotterranea and the Galleria Borbonica, see our comparison page. An underground visit is a good rainy-day alternative to a street walk, and a cool one in August.

Tips

  • Tip-based tours are not free: the guide lives on tips. Decide what two hours of a guide's time is worth to you before you set off, and carry cash.
  • Wear flat shoes: the old town is paved in uneven basalt.
  • Some churches ask for covered shoulders and knees; carry a light layer.
  • Go in the morning: the Santa Chiara cloister closes at 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, and churches such as the Santa Chiara basilica close from about 12:45 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Pair the walk with lunch in the same streets: our street food page lists cheap counters on the route.
