Lanes are a few meters wide, with washing lines overhead, ground-floor homes (the bassi) opening directly onto the street, and scooters in both directions. Many lanes are steep, some turn into steps, and pavements barely exist. Street shrines, murals and family life are everywhere; this is a residential neighborhood first, and the people on the doorsteps live there. University students rent rooms here too, since several university buildings are a short walk away, which adds to the late-evening crowd.

Evenings are busy around Largo Maradona and the lanes nearest Via Toledo, where trattorie and bars set up tables outside. Deeper in, the grid is quieter and darker. Balconies face each other across the lanes, so a room with a balcony also means your neighbors' television, conversations and 7 a.m. scooters. Our Quartieri Spagnoli walk is the best introduction.

Most beds here are in B&Bs and short-let apartments rather than hotels. The city tax differs by type since May 1, 2026: €5.50 per person per night at B&Bs and three-star hotels, €6 in short-let apartments. Before booking an apartment, check three things: the floor and whether there is a lift, whether the windows open onto a lane or a courtyard, and how you will reach the door with luggage. Taxis cannot enter many of the lanes.

The Quartieri are wedged between three transport points. At the bottom, Line 1's Toledo station on Via Toledo. At the south end, the Funicolare Centrale at Augusteo, up to the Vomero. At the north end, Montesanto, with the Montesanto funicular, Line 2 and the Cumana railway to the Campi Flegrei.

By OpenStreetMap foot routing from Largo Maradona: Piazza del Plebiscito 12 minutes (900 m), Piazza del Gesu Nuovo 13 minutes (1 km), Molo Beverello 17 minutes (1.3 km). Those are downhill or flat. Coming home means climbing, and the upper lanes near Corso Vittorio Emanuele are steep.

The Quartieri's reputation kept visitors away for decades. What visitors realistically face is the same as elsewhere in central Naples, at higher density: pickpocketing in crowds and snatch thefts, sometimes from scooters. The UK government's travel advice for Italy lists bag-snatching and pickpocketing in city centres as the main crime risks.

• Walk on the wall side, with your phone in your hand or pocket, not held out toward the lane.
• Carry your bag across your body and zipped.
• After dark, stick to the lanes with people and light, near Via Toledo and Largo Maradona.
• Do not photograph residents' homes and doorways without asking.

Most visitors who stay here have no trouble. If you would feel anxious in dense, busy lanes at night, choose Chiaia or Via Toledo instead; the sights are just as close. See Is Naples safe?

Do not. The lanes are too narrow for comfort, parking is for residents, and the north edge is covered by the Tarsia-Pignasecca-Dante ZTL, active every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hotel Il Convento lists partner garages from 300 m away, from €30 per 24 hours.

Stay here if you are on a budget, want to be central, and enjoy a neighborhood with its life on the street. Stay elsewhere if you sleep lightly, travel with small children or heavy luggage, have trouble with steps, or want calm after dark: Chiaia and the Lungomare are a short walk away and much quieter.
